We left Houston a few w ecks ago for
n short excursion in the country. The
liit place net isilcd a old Montgom-

improving. Thcj Invea respectable

in future be under the ncctv-itv of re-
sorting to Lynch law as they can m-

the ability of our District Attorney and
the promptness of our able Judge the
law v ill doubtless lie executed. They
have no house exclusively for divine
worship but they kindly Undcntl us

expected to accept on our return but
was prevented as the stage was ready
on our arrival to leave for Houston.
Wc expect at some future time to be
able to visit Montgomery and spend
some time w ith them.
The coifntry around this place seems
to be in a prosperous condition as there
are many wealthy farmers in old Mont-
gomery county.
From this place we proceeded to
Fant harpe's w here vv c met with a w arm
reception.
Two w eeks prior to this our Baptist
brethren had had an interesting meet-
ing the account of which you have had
over the signature of "T." The week
after the meeting of our Baptist breth-
ren our Presbyterian brethren (old
school) had a sacramental meeting.
Bros. Limber and Fullenwider in at-
tendance aided by bro. Walker of the
C. P. church. On our arrival on Satur-
day before the -1th Sabbath in July vv e
learned that bro. Walkcrhad a meeting
to commence that night. We attended
church but bro. Walker was not able
to attend owing to ill health. We how-
ever continued the meeting until Mon-
day night. The rreeting was attended
with much seriousness. Many present-
ed thtmselvcsat the altarof prayer and
scv cral joint d tile church.
Wc however had to disoontinue Ihc
meeting for w ant of assis.ai.ee.
On Saturday subsequent to the above
meeting our Me'hodist brethren com-
menced a protracted meeting at the
abov e place. This meeting vv as attend-
ed by Messrs. Whipnl Willi 11ns Oul-
law Gillett and otner brethren whose
nami s wc do not recollect- Ti.ey lnd
a blessed meeting ; some eight or ten
converts and many others w ho w ere
mourners that did not taste of a Re-
deemer's forgiving love. Our friends
will pardon us for staling that at this
meeting we had a brother and our sis-
ters (two.) to profess faith in Christ.
Bless God O my soul ! We participa-
ted with our Methodist brethren near
the close of lhc meeting as we were
prevented from doing so at the com-
mencement owing to urgent business.
Commencing on Friday night before
the 5th Sabbath in this month near. Dr.
Niblett's bros. Outlaw and Walker
commenced a union protractedmeeting.
Nothing more delights us than to see
brethren working together in unison.
Those two brethren have felt the im-
portance of uniting their efforts for the
salvation of the people. May God give
them abundant success at their contem-
plated meeting. Brethren the salrw-
tion of souls is the object for which we
should nil labor. Much and great good
has been effected in the above named
neighborhood and we trust and pray
that the work may spread all over old
Montgomery county.
Wc also had the pleasure of visiting
Iluntsvillc. This place is improving
rapidly for a country town. It is the
residence of Gen. Sam. Houston who
we learned is again n candidate for the
U. S. Senate. They have a well con-
ducted newspaper which we learn vv ill
soon be enlarged and come out in quite
a new dress. What we concciv e how-
ev or of much importance to the pros-
perity of the place and surrounding
country is the excellent school now in
opera'ion. Heretofore this town has
shond somewhat the fate of Snn Augtis-
tinc. The community has been div ided
on the subject of school efforts. Wc
trust however that the Trustees will
see the importance of purchasing Ihc
school building that is now vacant for
the female department; thereby uni-
ting the interests of nil. Oar friends

IEfWe received a letter this week
from Rev. H. Donnell. If we were to
attempt to describe our feelings on the
.reception of the letter it would be worse
than useless. It was after several cf -
forts that we could sufficiently com -
mand our feelings so as to be able to
read it. Though a priv ate letter we
hav e jriven it to the public knowing
that Father Donncll has a large num-
ber of acquaintances in this State.
Brethren converse with Father Don-
nell in the letter alluded and you will
sec the same spirit that animated him
in the wilderness of Alabama in 1800.

Our distii.c'ivc doctrine of election.
All Adam's family were chosen in
Christ to a day of probation. Personal
election turns on faith. The election
of all men to a day of mercy turned on
the divine will. Personal election
which is to n state of glory turns on
man's will aided by the Spirit of God :
"Elect through the sanctification of the
Spirit and belicft)f the truth." "Who-
soever will let him take of the waters
of life freely." Christ is both God and
man. He died for the vv hole and cv cry-
part of the whole family of Adam.
The Holy Spirit conv inccs the w orld ;
is given to every man. Repentance and
faith arc required of every sinner. Jus-
tification adoption regeneration sanc-

Christ lives and

delightful spirit of harmony appears to
exist among Christians of different de
nominations in this country. All mem-
