THE GREAT WESTERN.
"Liberty and the Union forrtrthc prineiplts nf Wasliington
Jefferson and Jackson.
IN proposing to establish in the city of New Orleans a new paper
under the above title wc arc encouraged by the glowing and mag-
nificent prospects which Beem to hover around this mighty Empo-
rium of the West pointing its destinies to a summit of commercial
grandeur to which no city in the world can ever expect to reach.
Nor arc those pr&spects confine alone to New Orleans. When we
take into view the numerous wide-Bpread and extended arma of the
noble Mississippi winding themselves through an extent of country
so immensely vast; embracing the moat fertile and productive region
perhaps in the known world; with a climate and scenery as delight-
ful as naturo could form them ; and a population of hardy inaus-
trious freemen increasing with every hour of the day wedo not hes-
itate in declaring our opinion Jthat the West is destined at an early
day to bo one of the finest the noblest section of country on the
faco of the globe; and that New Obleahs as a commercial city
may at no very distant period claim the proud appellation of Mis-
tress or the World.
With such a field than as is spread before us we cannot but feel
conscious of our success in the important labors which we are about
to undertake. Located as we shall be at the general centre of the
almost entire commercial business of the "Great Wtttf' and de
signing that our paper shall embrace all intelligence of importance of
the United States and of Foreign Governments it will be found
especially interesting and useful to every class of our fellow citizens
throughout the Western country.
The Great Western will be devoted mainly to Commerce will
support the interests of Agriculture and will take its political posi-
tion and plant its standard upon the broad parapet of Democracy ;
itwillalsocxtcnditsnoticetotheintercstsof Mechanics and to CUy
dXctrs J-c
Commerce. The larger portion of this paper will be strictly com-
mercial. All intelligence of importance of this character both domes-
tic and foreign wuTbe summed up at as early a moment as possible
so as toaflbrd our mercantile patrons every description of news which
they can desire under this head.
AcaiccLTCBE. While every other branch of industry in the United
States is receiving fresh and encouraging impulses for perseverance
this most important of all seems to flag behind the general inarch
of improvement and prosperity; and instead of being placed at the
head of our general national policy and receiving that fostering care
and protection to which it is pre-eminently entitled is left to gropo
its way simply by the dint of that perseverance and unwearied in-
dustry so characteristic of our hardy countrymen.
t will be our especial care to sustain the interests of this class of
our fellow citizens.
Politics. This department of our papcris one in which every
class of our citizens i interested. Under this head we shall give the
general political intelligence of the whole country; while we as the
conductors of a public journal are determined without fear favor
or affection to support with all our zeal such measures of policy
as alone will tcnti in our opinion to the promotion of our general
prosperity as a people the perpetuation of our liberties and our be-
loved Union.
This piper therefore will be purely Democratic in its principles:
having fonts object the diffusion of eipialrightst equal blessings and
equal burthens thereby promoting the general happiness of the poo-
pic; and to this end will all our energies be directed.
With regard to the great questions of policy which are now agitat-
ing the people of the United Stete3 respecting the currency we
unhesitatingly declare our entire preference of the Independent
Treasury System from our belief of its strict constitutionality and
in its tendency better calculated to promote the general prosperity
of all classes than any other which in our new can be conceived.
We arc strict constructionists ot the Federal Constitution and
shall always oppose those splendid schemes or-'Americau Systems1
of monopoly which have ever characterised the policy of the Feder-
al opposition recognising no implied interpretationa of that instru-
ment and believing that the 'GENERAL WELFARE of every
portion of our wide- spread confederacy depends on a stnet adherence
to its plain and straightforward meaning we shall not bo sparing in
our expositions and denunciations of tho3e daring attempts which
have and arc now being made by the reckless and aspiring leaders of
the Feoebal Pabtt to rend asunder this glorious Cuabtxb of our
rights and liberties and rear upon its rums a splendid Aristocracy
of wealth and power.
Earnestly advocating therefor as we shall always do these great
and lundamental principles of our government which were conceiv-
ed by a virtuous and patriotic ancestry while struggling for the rights
and liberties of mankind we shall in all cases give our support for
public offices to such men as we are assured shall have the patriot-
ism talents firmness and disposition to sustain and carry outthoso
principles successfully. With all our zeal and ability therefore we
shall advocate the re-election of MARTIN VAN BUREN for tho
next Presidential term with the fullest confidence in his exalted ta-
lents integrity and patriotism convinced that upon his success de-
pends in a very great nicasurcj the firm and lasting establishment
of those glorious principles of our revolution so admirably acted up-
on by Washixgto Jeftersox Madison and Jacksok. And for
for the second office in the gift of the American people we shall as
cordially give our support to the Hon. John Forsyth now Secreta-
ry of State
In announcing our preference of these talented patriotic long-tried
and approved statesmen for the highest offices in the go verument wo
feci a glowing confidence in the almost unanimous approval of our
fellow citizens of the West with an abiding belief that they will rally
around the standard thus laised proudly unfurling to the bieczc the
names of these distinguished individuals.
Mechanics. Under this head that large and respectable portion
ofourfcllow citizens among whom we have the honor of classing
ourselves shall have a hearing. We invite them to the use of our
columns. Their rights and interests must be sua tamed.
Domestic and Foreign Intelligence Under these different heads
will be found all important general intelligence both at home and
abroad.
City dXcvs. This head wul embrace all matters and ocrurences
of interest of every character relating to or transpiring within the
city.
Wc shall reserve a large portion of our paper for advertising patrons
both of the city and country; and as wc anticipate a numerous sub-
scription list and a wide-spread circulation it will be to the interest of
advertisers to appear in our columns.
