Earl Clarks who lives north-
east of Temple applied 30 pounds
of nitrogen to his wheat crop
about this time last yea and
he harvested 20 bushels ot
drouth. This indicates that
small grain producers who fail
to give their crop a top dressing
of nitrogen are passing up a
good opportunity to increase
yields.
This nitrogen can be applied
by putting down 100 pounds of
Waco on Johnsongrass control ammonium nitrate or 150 pounds
with chemicals and ways of re-'of ammonium sulphate. Thc
during hoeing costs by using increased yields will more than

to put it on the crop under fav

which may influence farmers to
continue turkey production at a
higher rate during 1957 al-
though prices received for the
record 1956 turkey crop were
the lowest in several 'years.
Some of the pressure from tne
completed. A motor grader was
employed to carry out this main-
tenance operation. The Blanton
farm is located some four miles
north and west of Granger
and is supervised by C. F. Fra-
zier of Granger.
Re-sectioning 'of this water-
way has become necessary from
the results of siltation through
the years and additional acres of
water being terraced into same
that they were not originally de-
signed for. The waterway is be
ing widened and enlarged upon
for additional cross-section and
therefore increased carry capa
city. Re-vegetation of disturbed
area will bo brought about
through the sodding of Bermuda
Grass.
According to James G. Gray
Soil Conservation Service per-
sonnel stationed in Bartlett this
waterway and the original ter-
races were installed some twen-
ty years ago The work was car-
ried out through the efforts of
the CCC Camp project head-
quartered in Bartlett at that
time. The waterway was shap
ed terraces constructed and the
waterways solid sodded to Ber
muda or Buffalo grass for
complete or turnkep job. I be-
lieve this was in 1937 he said.
To relate further Gray adds
practically all of the jobs of
that time were carried out in
the summer. They were costly
to install but provided a quick
opportunity to observe the ef-
fectiveness of the program
which was later to serve as the
foundation for the program de
veloped and adopted by the board
of supervisors of this Little
River-San Gabriel Soil Conser-
vation District.
In most instances the solid
sodding of waterways at the
time of terrace construction
proved satisfactory' though too
costly.In some instances rains
and heavy run-off would cause
blow out sections in waterways'
and occassionally complete re-
vegetation prior to concentr'a
tion of run-off through terrace
construction.
