Canadian switches districts
in newest UIL realignment
The University Interscholastic
League made its biennial an-
nouncement of school realign-
ments last Thursday, shifting
Canadian to District 1-2A from
District 2-2A, where it has been
since dropping classifications
from 3A in 1986. The latest re-
alignment will be in effect through
the 1997-98 school year.
Canadian’s decade-long resi-
dence in District 2-2A followed a
period from 1978 through 1986
during which school enrollment
here surged, and the school dis-
trict fluctuated between 3A and
2A classification.
Canadian and Sunray schools
each have joined District 1-2A in
the realignment, replacing Gra-
ver which moved down in classifi-
cation to 1A, and filling a gap in
what was previously only a five-
school roster. Sunray moves up in
classification from 1A to 2A, and
Canadian returns to District 1-2A
for the first time since 1980. They
join four other schools, including
Stratford, West Texas High, Boys
Ranch and Spearman.
Athletic Director David Flow-
ers was surprised by what were
major changes in UIL alignment
in this area, as were many other
school officials throughout the
Panhandle.
“We went to one of the tough-
est districts around,” Flowers
noted. “Spearman’s huge, and
gave us a tough scrimmage last
year. WT has beaten us the last
four times we’ve played them, and
got to the State semifinals this
year.”
The Canadian Wildcats de-
feated Stratford in a hard-fought
bi-district playoff game last year,
and Sunray advanced to regionals
in 1A as well.
Flowers had mixed feelings
about the new competitive field,
however. “We’ve always looked at
it as the tougher games you play
in district, the better you’ll be in
the playoffs,” he said. ‘The only
thing that’s not good, in my opin-
ion, is that we won’t have that all-
out speed to defense against.
We’ve always done a good job of
playing that speed, which pre-
pared us for district.”

Hiring process begins for
new ALCO store here
February 22nd, the deadline for
schools to challenge the UIL’s de-
cision, but the realignment dis-
rupts some long-time rivalries for
the Canadian Wildcats. One tradi-
tional foe, the Panhandle Pan-
thers, will likely be on Canadian’s
pre-district circuit, but the annual
big-game showdown between Ca-
nadian and Perryton is off the
schedule for the next two years.
That is a particular disappoint-
ment for his team, Coach Flowers
said, but “the kids are fired up
because it’s going to be new and
different.”
The shuffle lands Quanah and
White Deer in District 2-2A along
with Clarendon, Memphis, Pan-
handle and Wellington. Highland
Park jumped to 3-2A where it
joins Hart, Bovina, Hale Center,
Lockney and Olton.
In all, three area schools were
moved up a classification, five
moved down a classification, and
twenty-four changed districts.
Representatives of ALCO Dis-
count Stores will be in Canadian
interviewing applicants for jobs at
the store which it plans to open
here in April. Approximately
twenty-five employees will be
needed to staff departments rang-
ing from sporting goods to house-
wares, and ALCO officials have
made it clear that they hope to hire
people from the Canadian area.
Plans to open the new store
here were announced last week by
Glen Shank, President of Duck-
wall-ALCO Stores, Inc. The busi-
ness will be located adjacent to the
Pizza Hut in the building vacated
by Canadian Pharmacy Family
Center.
ALCO wil offer a full line of
general merchandise at discount
prices. Interviews will be held this
month in Canadian for staffing in
sporting goods, automotive,
health and beauty aids, stationery,
housewares, photographic, do-
mestics and ladies’, men’s and chil-
dren’s apparel departments. Em-
ployees will also be needed to
operate the registers, for mainte-
nance and customer service, and
in the receiving office.
Employee benefits will include
a profit-sharing plan, discounts on
purchases, sick leave, paid vaca-
tions and holiday pay.
Those interested in applying
for a position may pick up an ap-
plication at the Canadian/Hem-
phill County Chamber of
Commerce office. Interviews will
be scheduled at that time. The
Chamber office is located at 311
Main, and is open from 9-5 Mon-
day through Friday.
ALCO Discount Stores repre-
sent a division of Duckwall-ALCO
Stores, Inc. with headquarters in
Abilene, Kansas.
