FALL t PLANTING
This fall plant every acre you
can in some winter growing crop
and let your lands be getting
richer instead of poorer during
the winter months winter expo-
sure injures much southern
landj more than do the crops
grown in the summer by having
the fertilityleached out by the
winter rains a cover crop of
small grain clover or vetch
will prevent this at the same
time furnishing valuable feed as
grazing The hay crop this
is light and feed of all
kinds is going to be scarce and
high next spring therefore lit is
imperitive that you should get
planted early as possible all of
your corn and cotton land
Plant Oats and Vetch Rye
Wheat or Barley between the
cotton rows with drill or harrow
after the first picking and as
soon as corn is gathered cut
and turn under stalks deep as
you can and drill or harrow it
Remember that oats planted
in September or first of October
can be harvested in the first half
of May and the land planted in
cotton or some other crop

T OF EVERYTHING
Since the Civic League has so
faithfully worked for the im-
provement of the city and the
beautifying of our public streets
wouldnt it be good policy to go
a little further and request own-
ers of vacant lots to remove the
rubbish from the same and mow
the weeds off of them There
are several unsighly spots in the
city that destroy the beauty of
much of the good work already
done Especially is this so on
Austin Street between this
office and Jackson Street and in
many other parts of town An-
other improvement which we
suggest to property owners is to
straighten up their front fences
A board fence leaning out on the
sidewalk doesnt look well neith-
er is it conducive to the safety of
pedestrians on a dark night
By the way a little paint or
whitewash makes an old unsight-
ly fence look like a new one Itt
up to you property owners
to make these changes The
Civic League has done their duty
and are every day seeking to do
more good Come help them
Lets put on a new suit once a
year anyhow
