A Woman Tells How to Reduce
Expenses
The Womans Home Compan-
ion for September contains a
collection of practicalsuggest
ions on how to reduce family
expenses One contributor says
Of courte tho cost of living
has advanced to a great degree
but the close observer will find
how she can greatly lessen some
expenses First I find it a
great benefit to go to market as
early in the morning as permis
sable thus obtaining vegetables
etc while fresh and saving
perhapst a pound or two waste
Anotherway in which I have re
chiced expenses is by purchasing
morethtfiL one canjL4iaundoE
what it might be at a time for
instance prunes fifteen cents
per pound or two pounds for
twentyfive cents and a well
known laundry soap at five cents
per cake or seven cakes for
twentyfive cents
Now in dealing with the un-
scrupulous merchant it is neces
sary to be very inquisitive as he
does not care to inform you of
those prices
Another great help is to in
sist upon accurate weights and
measures or perhaps the gro-
cer across the street sells lard or
baco at two cents less per pound
If the lady who goes to market
will observe these few items
mentioned and let the dealer see
that she intends to get what a
dollar should purchase instead
of what it sometimes does pur
chase she will no deubt be sur
prised at the end of the month
toseewhal a factor her atten-
tion to the culinary department
has been in solving the problem
of the advanced cost of living

Express Conpanies Are Unnecessary
About the most inexcusable
tax that is laid on the backs of
the people is the express com
pany For carrying an express
package the railroad company
receives half and the express
company the other half In
some cases the express compa-
ny may receive more than half
but that is about the average
division
It is the business of the rail-
roads to carry matter such as
the express companies carry
Why should the person who
receives an express package
double and more than double
what would be a reasonable
charge for having his goods
transported
No corporations in the country
have made such unreasonable
profits as the express compan
ies The wonder is that the

I will always use Hunts Cure for
itching trouble and I tell all I sec

that we are all well of that dreadful
trouble The first of last fall my little

boy
ing trouble Thinking his blood was
bad I gave him a blood tonic but he
got worse aud could not sleep at night
Some said he had itch and told me
What was good for it I used what
people said would cure it but nothing
did any good My other two children
and myself took the disease from him
in January 1911 I Baw Hunts Cure
advertised and I purchased a 50c box
It helped my little boy so much I got a
box for each one of the family and
now we are all well of that awful trou-
ble Hunts Cure will cure itch in a

The antis who are claiming to

THE NEGRO Al
mil
4
Vet
In the recent prohibition elec 4 3
tion quite a large number of vthe
negro preachers teachers and
laity placed themselves upon the
right side of the prohibition
question and they did it in the
face of strong inducements to do
otherwise But they stood firm
and proved themselves worthy
ofconfidence and high regard
Hundred of them are worthjr
of all praise and encouragement
Theyhive demonstrated the
gence goodmoralsand a high
order of citizenship And we
take their action as a good omen
It leads us to believe that the
good and true negroes are ready
to stand with the good and true
white people in our effort to pro
mote the largest interest of both
races In an emergency they
can be depended upon to do their
duty as patriots and Christians
For this class we have the high
esta appreciation and as in the
past so in the future fchey will
always know where to find their
best and most unfiailing friends
All honor to these good and
true negroes who stand by right
and against wrong They are
the hope of their race and f ronr
their services are to come the
best results in the training and
directing of the negroes in ways
of peace prosperity and devotion
to law and order
But the great bulk of the negro
vote went against us It was in-
fluenced by the vicious element
among the white and negro
race And we are sorry to say
that a few of the leading minis-
ters and teachers among the ne-
groes listened to the blandish-
ments of the antis and prosti-
tuted their ability and influence
to support the saloon Sin Killer
Griffin the noted negro evange-
list Raynor a man whof or years
has posed a teacher among them
and Rev J W Stokes who as-
sumed to be the most scholarly
man among his race all did their
utmost to direct the negro vote
to the saloon cause An they ex-
erted large influence in their
efforts But to cap the climax of
disappointments of this kind
President E L Blakeshear of
Prairie View Normal for Ne-
groes the only institute of ne-
groes supported by the State
reversed his position of long-
standing on the prohibition ques
tion and did more to mislead and
confuse his race than any other
negro in Texas Why he did
this we are not going to say but
no man will have to impose a
heavy burden upon his credulity
in reaching a conclusion upon
the subject He wrote a cate-
chism and put it in childlike
language so as to be easily un-
derstood by the simplest of his
race in which he told them that
if prohibition carried the negroes
would be disfranchised their
liberty would be imperiled and
that other dire calamities would
follow He knew better for he
is an educated man He also
told his people that the prohibi-
tionists were not their friends
but that the antis were the peo-
ple to whom the negro must look
for safety and protection When
he penned such misrepresenta
tions he did not believe what he
said He knew it was asolutely
false Yet his nefarious and
false teaching had wide influ
ence on the ignorant mind
For the bulk of the ignorant
negroes who followed the vicious
white mans lead and the lew
designing leaders among the ne-
groes who wilfully and perhaps
for a consideration did their ut-
most to throw the negro vote to
the saloons we hae more of
pity than censure They did not
know any better They have
yet to learn their duty But for
these so called leaders who with
full knowledge of their terpi
tude we have nothing but un-
mitigated contempt They are
not worthy of the confidence of
decent white people They are-
a disgrace to the negro popula-
tion of Texas a miserable tra-
vesty upon manhood and good
citizenship and the most dan-
gerous and hurtful influence
with which the progress of the
negro race has to contend They
are willing for a mess of pottage
to deliver their ignorant hordes
over to the saloon and its cor-
rupting influence They are not
worthy to be recognized as the
friends of good government to
say nothing of morals and re-
ligion All praise to the high
toned negroes who stood by prin-
ciple but we feel nothing but
condemnation for the tretcher
ous leaders among them who
