general Feraadez to send me provisions: his answer (No. 15)
shows that I ought not to expect.then, foreven those whichhe says
were coming in the schooner Watchman, were not enough for
mrore than five days: what resource had I then, except to continue
retreating? I ought not to suppose that any effort would be m*e
in Matamoros to provide for men because, in addition to what he
says in his communication referred to, that there were none there,
Mr. Fernandez took by force from the commissary, some which
were sold in the market, even of those belonging to the army,
which Mr.-Cayetano Rubio had prepared; in consequence, I
ordered the troops to continue on to that place, and in doing so
I think I have rendered a service, because on the contrary, some
would haveperished from necessity, and -thers dgerted so that
to this measure is their preservation due, and I wll never repent
it, wbhtever be the comment made.
In fine, your Excellency, generals Urrea and Fernandez
obtained the most complete success; my discredit, the command,
promotions, every tHing that all this could produce, and may it

republic mean, while time solves the problem, showing rho
has acted with the most rectitude in their intentios, restiig oa
my conscience and oi the justice of thbejudges who may have
to try me, to remain tranquil, and believe myself entitled to 4*Iof
