R.A. CONNER, Civil Law, was born in Marlin,
Texas. He married Genevive Burnett of Seymour,
on July 22, 1938. They have two children. He has
been a member for eight years, served as a director
vice-president and president. He earned his first
money picking .burr clover seed at 15< per pound.
He spent it on candy since bubble gum had not been
invented. His first job was practicing law and eco-
nomy, mostly economy. This occupation "seemed to
be better than working for a living." The only other
occupation was 38 months of Army life in World War
II. From other people he has learned mostly "the
fact of Christianity". For relaxation he watches
television and his greatest accomplishment is"pass-
ing the buck." He graduated from A&M Consolidated
high school, Texas A&M and the University of Texas.

D.J. DYESS came to Spur in the Spring of 1926.
He worked for Bill Simpson for four years, then he
worked for Harvey Stock four yars. From 1934 to
1944 he worked for Earnest George, and in 1944
he began working for A.B. (Shorty) Hogan. He bought
out Shorty Hogan's shop in 1945 and changed the
name to "Dyess Barber Shop.
In 1928, he married Marie Watson. They have
four children, Bill, Betty, Bob and Nell, all of the
children graduated from Spur High School.
Mr. Dyess is a charter member of the Spur Lions
Club, he served as the first secretary of the club.
They belong to the Methodist Church, and own and
operate the Dyess Tea Room. It is a catering ser-
vice to large groups and special parties.

FOSTER COOK, School Administrator, married
Docia at Peacock, Texas on Sept 28, 1928. They have
two children. He has been a member of Rotary for
11 years, serving as director and vice-president.
To earn his firstmoney he harvested wheat andbought
a baseball glove and hat. His first real job was
professional baseball, he played, then managed
a semi-pro team. Then he worked at railroad
labor, clerked in a men's store. He took up his school
duties, because he was interested in coaching and
he wanted to be a teacher, coach. From other people
he learned to be fair and firm, make a stand and let
people know it. He spends his leisure time reading
and watching T.V. He belongs to the State Teachers
Association, the Methodist Church, a Mason and a
member of the Chamber of Commerce. He graduated
from Granger High School, Howard Payne College,
Hardin Simmons, and Texas Tech.

GEORGE GABRIEL, Piece Goods, married Margaret
in Oklahoma, Oct. 28, 1934. She is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cohlmia. They have three sons.
He has been a member for ten years and has ser-
ved as director and several committees. He earned
his first money plowing and bought a gun with it.
His first job was as a salesman. For relaxation, he
likes to hunt, play a little golf, and watch T.V. He is
a member of the Masons, the Baptist Church, and an
active member of the Chamber of Commerce, he is
Mayor of Spur.
***WRATHER F. GILBERT, Retail Paints, married
Willie on June 1, 1917, in Carbon, Texas They have
two sons and two grandchildren. He hasbeen a mem-ber of the club for 18 years and has done his hitch
as Director. Another cotton chopper to earn his first
money, and he saved it for a long time. Went to work
for the District Clerk at Eastland, and later taught
school at Rommey, Texas. There the District Man-
ager of lumber came and hired him. He says one
lesson he has learned from an employee is not to
worry too much about business. He spends his spare
time hunting, fishing, cleaning up and remodeling about
his home. Claims to be an accomplished dish wash-
er. He is a member of the Methodist Church and the
Masonic lodge.

W.W. (BILL) GREGORY, Soft Water Service, mar-
ried Lily sometime in 1935. He was born on June
1st and Lily on June 27th. They have three girls.
Bill's folks, Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Gregory live at
Lamesa and Lily's father, W.C. (Bill) McArthur
lives near Spur, Bill has been a member of the
club for six years and has served as a board member
and sergeant at arms. He earned his first money
while working as a farm hand and bought livestock to
earn his education. He worked as a Sheepherdsman
at Texas Tech, working his way through college. He
says the best lesson he has learned is "Do your job
well, give the other man due credit, provide for your
family, and keep yourself busy." He belongs to the V.A.
Teachers Assoc., a Member of the Methodist Church.
He attended Lubbock High School and Texas Tech.

W.F. GODFRYE, Senior Active. Married Katherine
in Fort Worth on September 19. They have two chil-
dren and two grandchildren. He is a charter member
of the club, and has served as the president. He
made his first money selling watermelons and bought
a calf. He got a real job in a grocery store so he
could get all the candy he wanted. He became a Ford
Dealer so he could drive all the cars he wanted to.
Since that, he has done banking, cattle business and
oil business. He is a deacon in the Baptist Church,
a director in the bank, and an honorary member of
the FFA. He likes to play dominoes, hunt and fish.

J. FIKE GODFREY, Automobile Retailer, married
Naomi at Phillips, Texas on March 13, 1948. They
have two children, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.F.
Godfrey, Spur. Naomi's parents are Mr. and Mrs.
A,W. Sweeney, Phillips, Texas. He has been a mem-
ber of the club for six years. Has served as vice-
president and director. He made his first money
sacking groceries for Safeway and bought a radio.
He was road test engineer for Phillips Petroleum
Company, but being born and bred to it, he became
a Ford Dealer. Other jobs include U.S. Navy officer,
Boy's camp counselor, Blue Print operator. He has
learned a lot from other people. "When you loose
your enthusiasm you lose your life." He attended
Spur High School, Texas Tech, Industrial Engineering,
and Ford Motor Company merchandising School.

WALTER GRUBEN, Electornics, married Eula
on August 6, 1930, at Spur. His mother, Mrs. Marie
Gruben, lives in Spur, and his wife's parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Allan Deaton, Sr, live in Matador. He
has been a member for nine years, serving as
President and Director. He earned his first money
picking cotton and saved it. His first real job wasaccounting and paymaster at the Hilton Hotel Coffee
Shop in Abilene. He has been a salesman, but found65
