CHAPTER III.
SCARCELY had the people of Texas heard of the difficulties
and grievances brought upon them by the General
Government, when they were thrown into utter anarchy
and confusion by a division in the State Legislature and
authorities at Monclova in July, 1834. This was caused
by the collision between the President, Santa Anna, and
the General Congress, on the 13th of May of the same
year. One party declared for Santa Anna, chose a
military officer for their governor, put themselves under
the protection of the soldiery, and retired to Saltillo,
where they proceeded to annul the decrees passed by the
Constitutional Legislature at Monclova, from the period of
its election in January, 1833. The other party remain.

tillo as unconstitutional. The people of Texas expected
to find a remedy for the anarchy necessarily resulting
from this state of things, in the approaching constitutional
elections of State representatives and officers for the
years 1835 and '6. That period, however, passed under
the disputed authority of two governors. Now, in the
early part of the year 1835, many who had before been
in favor of peace, lest anarchy should be perpetual, began
to speak openly of the necessity of separating themselves
from Coahuila. The people of Coahuila became alarm.
ed, and called upon the Texans to assist them in council,
in order to ", save the country from anarchy and confu.
