sures of some in getting up a petition, which, at the
time, he thought inexpedient, yet, obedient to the popular
will, when constitutionally and legally expressed,
Gen. Austin, the man of the people's choice, in April,
1833, set out for the city of Mexico, as commissioner,
to obtain from the General Government a redress of
various grievances, and particularly the separation of
Texas from Coahuila, and its recognition and recep.
tion as a State of the Confederacy.
Arrived in the metropolis of the nation, Gen. Austin
engaged heartily in the discharge of the duties of his
mission, as well from a conviction of the necessity to
Texas of a State Government, as a regard to the duty he
owed his constituents. He urged the claims of Texas in
a pressing manner, representing that its affairs required
the prompt attention of Government, and that "the people
there had taken the position, that if the evils which
threatened the ruin of the country were not remedied,
the people of Texas would remedy them of themselves."
This, so plain and candid representation, was construed
into a threat, though none was intended; and Austin,
after having for months labored in vain to obtain for the
people of Texas either a State Government or the redress
of their grievances, in the month of October
wrote home, advising the people to form a State de
facto of themselves. As grounds for this advice, many
circumstances doubtless came under the observation of
Austin, of which he alone could rightly judge. To one
at a distance, and unacquainted with those circumstances,
the advice may seem to savor of rashness;
and yet it is known to all, that the Government of
