done right, and in order to protect themselves, the couple
employed as their legal counsel a combination attorney
and official of the Clearwater Bank.
At the appointed time the property owner, his
"agent" and the third man, together with the Bockermans
and their attorney met in the directors' room of
the bank.
The attorney called the Bockermans' attention to
a slight typographical error in the deed. He was so
cautious that he ordered a new one made out.
They congratulated themselves upon their choice of
such a careful adviser. At the mention of a new deed
the third man spoke up.
"Quite accidentally," said he, "I have a portable type
writer with me. I would be glad to type a new deed
for you. It will save you time, and possibly money!"
The Bockermans thanked him. Everyone was so
kind. Perhaps it was because they were elderly, Mrs.
Bockerman had thought. At any rate their attorney
had told them the abstract and title had come up in
perfect shape.
They waited.
The young typist made a mistake in the first copy
he prepared. Almost at the end of a flawless second
attempt he made a grievous error. He was very particular
about his work. It would not take long to make
out another one. He would hurry, yet be careful. The
t!lird was ruined. Something was the matter with the
typewriter. But he would surely have a perfect copy
now!
While in the midst of this perfection of art in deed
making Mr. Bockerman noticed the clock. He nudged
Mrs. Bockerman.
"It's almost 4 o'clock," he said.
"Yes, I hope he gets through soon, I hate to keep
all this money over night."
She wound the strap of her brown wrist bag once
again around her arm. She said to her husband behind
