and they parted and walked off. As Johnson moved toward
the ticket office he ran into an acquaintance and
said:
"Well, what they don't know won't hurt them, will
it ?" They both laughed knowingly.
" "I'm going off to celebrate!" explained Johnson.
It's too cold for me to go hunting, this weather, so
I'm just going out on a little spree !"
I motioned to Pete. "There!" I pointed to Johnson,
is a friend to Steel, a friend to Furey and a friend to
Spencer! He is Johnson. Follow him, and don't let
him get away!" Pete found it easy to engage in conversation
with them.
He told them he wished he could go hunting. This
Seemed to amuse them and they talked to him in that
patronizing way elders so frequently do to children.
They said thev were going to Montreal, Canada.
I waited until train time, and when I saw the three
of them on board I followed a few coaches behind.
Pete still stuck to them.
They did not mention hunting anything but whiskey
and wine in Montreal. These interests, as well as other
important ones were calling them to Canada, they explained.
Pete sat in their section and listened to their plans
for getting the booze out of the storehouse and selling it.
Pete told them he lived in New Mexico and had
just sold out his sheep and seven carloads of cattle on
tlle Chicago market. He said that as long as he was so
close he had been taking a holiday and had visited
Niagara Falls. 13uffalo, and now had decided to run up
to Montreal and get a little of the "hootch" for himself.
When we got to Montreal I trailed the trio to the
Windsor Hotel where they all registered. I did the
same, after giving them time to get upstairs.
Pete and I then got together for the first talk since
boarding the train at Buffalo.
He said they were very nice to him and especially
