through the heads and shoulders of the watchers. We
fought our way after them, never losing sight of them
for a minute.
While I had been unable to get a close-up of Spencer,
yet I was sure it was he.
The four lined up at the curb like pals at a bar.
They stood looking across the street at Strother whose
spider legs were slowly but surely creeping up the smooth
side wall of the hotel.
I was standing at the right hip pocket of Spencer
and Pete was behind the man standing at Spencer's side.
They were unaware of our proximity.
At this instant a big burly Canadian came floundering
up behind me. He had his eyes riveted on Strother's
ascent and, not looking where he was going, crashed into
me, throwing me into Spencer.
This, of course, startled Spencer. He swung around
with raised fist and looked into my eyes.
There was no longer doubt as to who he was. One
look at that crooked nose and it was settled.
He recognized me as quickly as I did him.
"Come on!" he exclaimed to his friends and swung
one of his companions between him and me.
They started to paw their way back through the mob
of thirty thousand people, Spencer in the lead, the others
following, and Pete and I after them. Pete was ahead
of me. As they opened up the trail, we followed in it.
After battling our way for fifty yards, Spencer
checked in his flight and whispered something into the
ear of a tall heavy-set man.
Instantly the man threw his hands into the air and
uttered strange idiotic guttural noises. He reeled in the
small opening, and just as Pete ran along-side of him
the fellow crashed down on him, mashing him into the
snow.
It was a strange tableau! I kept my eyes on Spencer,
who was taking advantage of our blockade and beating
his way from us as fast as possible.
