IV
Personally he has always been honorable and
straight-forward. His jovial disposition has endeared
him to a host of friends. His thorough knowledge of
agriculture has made him an authority on cattle and
land. His vast store of wild-animal lore has furnishea
enlightenment to many students of the fauna of Texas.
In his habits he was always clean and abstemious.
No intoxicants, tobacco, or even coffee were used, and
his speech was free from profanity.
He trusted his fellow-man as he himself could be
trusted.
To him all law was infallible until he had seen
man-made laws set aside by men as lightly as pawns
in a game of chess.
We promptly entered into a contract to publish this
book, and later to have a scenario written. For months
we, with an amanuensis, have labored daily with M[r.
Norfleet, taking notes and dictation, then writing while
under the spell of his vivid memories.
All through the story the observant reader will perceive
the thread of another plot-a plot as old as time.
That the second plot with its lesson may reach the
public as vividly as it came to me, is my most earnest
wish.
