FRIDAY, JANUARY 4, 1007
1906-1907.
, With this issue the Tribune and
its many hind readers start out
on anther year. The year ot
1000, is on the book of records,
and id now numbered with the
past. To all we trust the new
year will be one of the brightest
spots in then lives, and as wo
now stand upon its threshold
Jet us look forward to that end.
The year just closed has indeed,
been a most prosperous one, yet
to many homes the sable mantel
of sorrow darkened the sunshine
of happiness, and the grim reap-
er has left a scar that time oannot
efface, and as we look out upon
the year just entered, we cannot
but wpnder what our lot will be;
will it be a pathway strewn with
flowers, or shall it be one of sad-
ness and sorrow. However let
us prepare to meet what comes,
only trusting that all will be for
the best.
If more people would observe
the scriptural injunction, "Judge
not that ye be not judged," this
old world would be a, great deal
brighter. In other words, always
look at your neighbor's best traits
and not his worst. If you, only
will try you can nearly always
find something commendable in
your fellow man. Then, .why
don'tyou do it?
"Wicked men can not be friends
'either among themselves or with

From a commercial standpoint
it is with great pleasure that most
everyone can refer to the year
of 1006, and it is to be hoped that
the present year will be such that
will call forth the same remarks.
Let us scatter flowers upon the
grave of the departed year in
token of our gratitude for the
many blessings bestowed upon us
during its existence. Every'busi-
ness man in Bartlett bas been
prosDerous and only asks that
1007 will bring them as much
prosperity as the past year did.
Among the best feature" of the
year was the absence of those
seeking credit. Everybody had
plenty of money, and all wanted
the beBt going, regardless of
price, In fact, the day of cheap
goods has passed merchants say
they cannot handle them as they
are a drag on the market.
A VISIT to our school and see
the three hundred pupils paoked
and jammed in that old struct-
ure would certainly convince any
parent or patron that has a spark
of pride in nur town and com-
munity, or any interest whatever
in the welfare of the many chil-
dren to be educated, that Bart-
lett not only ought to have but
must have a new and more com
modious scho'ol building. It is
nothing more than a shame that
that a prosperous and wideawake
town like Bartlett should neg-
loot such an important matter.
Let us go to work and do some-
thing. To the business men of Bart-
lett, to its many readers through-
out the town and country, to all
who by word or act, helped to
make tho pfist year ono of the
most' prosperous in . our Uvea,
The Tribune manntforaent ex,-
tonds heartfelt 'thanks, and
wifihos you a prosperous 1007.

Extracting the Sunshine.
Mark Twain long ago solvad
the problem of growing old grace-
fully. He has managed to keep
the Bright and hopeful side of all
things before his eyes. Even
his sorrows bavo been viewed
from the standpoint of an apcstle
of sunshine,
Iu tho Boston Herald a writer
direots the attention to the fol-
lowing extract from one of Mr.
Clements' recent contributions to
the North American Review, ir.
which he speaks of the death of
hlB daughter, Susy:
"Susy died at the right timo,
the fortunate time of life, the
happy age, twenty -four years.
At twenty-four 6uch a girl has.
seen the best of life life as a
happy dream. After that, risks
begin ; responsibilities come, and
with it the cares, the sorrows, and
the inevitable tragedy. For her
mother's sake I would haye
brought her back from tho grave
if I could, but 1 would not for
my own."
Could any philosophy be finer
than that? No; very few men
can see, as Mark Twain always
seems to see, the real nugget of
gold among the baser surround-
ing clods. Very few are permit-
ted to die just at tho happiest
moment; very few are permitted
to leave behind them loved ones,
who oan. and do, see the bright-
ness through the apparent dark-
nePB. It is only thoMarkTwains
who are permitted to point out.
this philosophy of sunshine to
their follows. It is a great thing
to dio, we should think, "at tho
right time, the fortunata time of
life, tho happy age." And it is
an even greater thing to know
that somo loved one has died
just so. Washington Herald.
Farmers Union.
There will bo a meeting of the
Diatriot Farmer's Union, at the
Lodge Hall in Bartlett, on Satur-
day before tho third Sunday in
this month. All locals are re-
quested to send delegates. A full
attendance is desired.

The Tribune fails;; to see tho
legality in the primary elections
now being hold in somo counties
in an endeavor to defeat Senator
Bailey, ' They nro nothing more
'than to gratify partisanship.
