What is
CASTOR IA
Castoria is Dr. Samuel Pitclicr's proscription for Infants
and Children. It contains neither Opium, Morphine nor
ether Narcotic substance. It is a harmless substitute
for Paregoric, Drops, Soothing Syrups, and Castor Oil.
It is Pleasant. Its guarantee is thirty years' use by
Millions of Mothers. Castoria destroys Worms and allays
fovcrishness. Castoria prevents vomiting Sour Curd,
cures Diarrhoea and Wind Colic. Castoria relieves
teething troubles, cures constipation and flatulency.
Castoria assimilates the food, regulates tho stomach
and bowels, giving healthy and natural sleep. Cas-
toria is the Children's Panacea—tho Mother's Friend.
Castoria.
"Castoria is an excellent medicine for chil-
dren. Mothers have repeatedly told me of its
good cffect upon their children."
Dk. G. C. Osgood,
Lowell, Mass.
"Castoria is the best remedy for children of
which I am acquainted. I hope the day is not
far distant when mothers will consider the
real interest of their children, and use Castoria
instead of the various quack nostrums which
are destroying their loved ones, by forcing
opium, morphine, soothing syrup and other
hurtful agents down their throats, thereby
sending them to premature graves."
Dr. J. f. Ki.vchelol,
Conway, Ark.
Castoria.
"Castoria is so well adapted to children that
I recommend it as superior to any prescription
known to me."
II. A. Archer, M. D.,
III So. Oxtord St., Brooklyn, N. Y.
"Our physicians in the children's depart-
ment have spoken highly of their experi-
ence in their outside practice with Castoria,
and although we only have among our
medical supplies what is known as regular
products, yet we are free to confess that the
merits of Castoria has won us to look with
favor upon it."

VIA SOLITARIA.
Alone 1 walk tho peopled city.
Where each seems happy with his own.
Oh, friend*, I ask not for your pltj—
I walk alono.
No more for me yon lake rejoices,
Though moved by loving airs of June.
Oh, birds, your sweet and piping voiccs
Are out of tune.
In vain for mo tho elm tree archcfl
Its plumes in many a feathery apray.
In vain tho evening's starry marched
And sunlit day, .
In vain' your beauty, summer flower*.
Ye cannot greet, those cordial eye®.
Thoy g:ue on other fields than oura
On other skies.
The gold 13 rifled from the coffer;
The Iliads is stolen from the sheath.
Life has but one more boon to offer.
And that is—death.
Yet well I know tho voice of duty.
And, therefore, life and health must crave
Though sho who gavo the world it*beaut,
is in her grave.
I live, O lost one! for tho living
Who drew their earlier life from thoe.
And wait until, with glad thanksgiving,
I shall lio free.
For life to mo is as a station
Wherein apart a travelor stands-
One, absent long from home and nation,
In other lands.
And I am ho who stands and 1MIMS
Amid tho twilight's chill and gloom,
To hear approaching in tho distance
The train for home.
For death shall brir.g another mating
Beyond the shadows of the tomb.
On yonder shore a bride is waiting
Until I come.
In yonder fields arc children playing,
And there—oh, vision of delight!—
I see the child and mother straying
lu robes of white.
Thou, then, the longing heart that breakest,
Stealing the treasures one by one,
I'll call theo blessed when thou makest
The parted—one.

An netivo monibor of tho London
detective force narrates an amusing
adventure, which Bhows that tho
cleverest men aro liablo to err when
nature sets herself to outwit them:
I was instructed to arrest a certain
man, with whoso appearance I felt
myself to ho perfectly familiar, and
I kept a keen lookout for my cus-
tomer. Tlio very next day I "spot-
tod" him on an omnibus in the
Strand, pursued tho vehicle, and
having satisfied invsolf by a closer
look took him a way to the station,
ho nil tho while protesting that I
had made a mistake.
I had Ho turned out to bo a ro-
spectable gentleman, with a most
peculiar anil unfortunato likeness to
tho wanted man 1 was much disap-
pointed Not only had 1 missed tho
party 1 wanted, but 1 had bunglod
tho job. 1 was yet in my doteetive
novitiate, and 1 got pretty severely
snubbed by my chief.
Tho very noxt day while walking
down a street, in Islington this time,
I stopped and rubbed my eyes. Here
was my man coming, drossed totally
unlike tho stranger of yesterday. 1
tapped him on the arm. He turned
round and exclaimed, "You, is it?
and 1 informed him of my business.
Entering a cab, wo went to tho sta-
tion, not another word passing be-
tween us.

Origin of Itallok,
Italic letters wero first used about
the year 1500 by Aldus Manutius, a
Venetian printer. Ho observed the
many inconveniences resulting from
the vast number of abbreviations
which were then so frequent among
the printers that a book wasdifllcult
to understand. A treatise was actual-
ly written on the art of reading a
printed book and thus addressed to
tho learned. By introducing tlio
italio letter bo contrived an expedi-
ent by which these abbreviations
might, lio entirely got rid of, and yet
books suffer little increase in bulk
He dedicated his invention to the
Italian states; honco the name It
has also been distinguished by tho
name of the inventor and called tho
Aldino Tho first book printed in
italics was an edition of "Virgil'
