by Mr Wise of Yirgiia, Jor intimating that the motion to

Mr Slade continued his remarks; and the southern
mombers became more and more excited. Thr speaker
at length called him to order for wandering from his snb-
joct. Mr Lcgare of South Carolina got the floor, and asked
permission to say a few words. He was under tho influ-
ence of great feeling .and excitement, and begged the
memflcr from Vermont not to proceed. Mr L. as one
of the most eloquent men in the house, was too much ex
cited at the present moment to speak with any degree of
coolness. With great ardor and justice he vindicated the
south from the attack made by Mr Slade, and suid that
the Homes and firesides of tho south her dearest institu-
tions and her peace her 'domes ic happiness all that
she had and was was identified with this question, and
ho therefore begged that the member from Vermont w .mid
doiist.
Mr Slade refused again and again to yield the floor,
except when called tu order by the members of th - house.
'Mr Dawson of Georgia twice asked permission to reply
to some severe remarks made oy Mr S. but Mr S. rcfu-
sod to yield-the floor. Here Mr Legare, much excited,
moved an adjournment, although it was not then one o'
clock. Mr Logare's motion was not in order, and of
course was not put by the spo-iker. Mr Dawson of Geor-
gia calle i lor tho ordesjiif the day the further consider-
ation of the president's message the motion was not'in
erder. and Mr S. was suffered to proceed.
For a ha'f hour Mr S. went on without interruption,
animadverting in strong language not merely on slavery
in' the District of Columbia, but in all the states. .
- Mr Dawson, Mr Wise and Rhettcitled him to order but
from'the nature of" the subject, which I will explain by
and by Mr S. was again suffered to procoed. The house
at length became too-hot Mr Slack's rom-irks too per-
xonal and the southern members too mjch excited to
hear m.ire. v
Mr Rhctt and Mr Wise at the same moment both called
him to ordcr, and for the first time, tho house was in or-
der. Mr 8. was reading the opinions of several distin-
guished men upon the merits of slavery. By a rule of tho
lio.lsc, it is not order In read from any document, book or
pamphlet, without tho consent of the house. The mem-
ber objectod, nnd MrS. was compelled t take his seat.
Thi however wm the le-iit exciting part of the scene.
Mr Wise after s.iyig that Mr Slade had ontered into a-
fiillcxaniimtinnofthc slave question, CALLED UPON
THE'SOUTHERN DELEGATION TO LEAVE THE"
HALL. ''Agreed, agreed, agreed!" was responded by
a dozen voices, and in company with twenty or twenty-
five members from the southern 'states, Mr Wise left the
.hall .
The house wahcrc in great confusion. A half dozen

.order." Mr Rliott said that the southern delegation wo-i!d
rapetm the district ul Columbia, committee room at three i

Mr Slade begged permission to go on in order.
Mr McKay of IS'. O. called him to order, ;tnl the
speaker lold him to take liKiujat. His motion to be
permitted to proceed in ordir, was however put to
rthc house, and tlieyeas nnd n:tys dt-nvindwl. A m-
