Many Silo Accidents
Are Found Avoidable
Far too many serious accidents
occur In connection with silo filling
most of which can be prevented by
exercising even a small amount of
care Probably the most common
is that of falls from the silo in put
iMnz up or taking down the filler
jilpes or in putting In the doors
Even a 10 foot fall may be very
serious If one strikes on his head
falls with a leg or arm underneath
or falls on the cutter or other ma-
chine
Also many lose a hand or an arm
by trying to crowd the corn into a
cutter which Is partly choked Keep
the hands at least a foot away from
the feed rolls and If closer crowd-
ing must be done use a forked
tick
Be careful that the cutting knives
arc properly adjusted and the ad-
justing bolts and hocking nuts prop-
erly secured Any clicking or tap-
ping should at once be Investigated
by stopping the cutter and testing
the knife adjustments and lock nuts
end these should be gone over each
half day before the cutter is started
upDo
Do not run the cutter faster than
called for in the manufacturers di-
rections Experimental work shows
that excessive speed not only is
dangerous but that It wastes an
enormous amount of power and
that usually just as good results
will be obtained at the lower speeds
Australia Erosion
Farmers from all parts of Austra-
lia attended the countrys first soil
erosion exhibition held in Sydney
recently Arranged by the new soil
conservation service whose slogan
is Form the soil dont mine it
the exhibit included photographs Il-
lustrating that the best farming and
grazing districts in New South
Wales arc becoming a desert Rem-
edies suggested were checkerboard
and contour plowing and planting
the right trees and grasses
