COUNTir IDItOK
EDITOR BEN EZZELL of Canadian with Journalistic skill ami accuracy
has put the recent fiasco in Alabama and Mississippi
in clear perspective
Ho wrote
Federal marshals werent sent into Alabama last weekend to Invade
slates rights they were sent there to protect the rights
of Individuals
The Governor of Alabama who made motions toward controll tig
the rioting enly after federal officers had moved ii to Jo so made
great todo about the invasion of his state by federal cuthority and
predictably raised the familiar hue and ory of states rights being
endangered
couNi r loitoi
INLESS HE IS DUMDER than he looks which is unlikely Gov
ernor John Patterson of Alabama knows better than that
If the right of Alabama to control Its own affairs as a state
was endangered then Governor Patterson helped as much as any
man to endanger It by falling or refusing as Its chief executive
officer to put the legal machinery of the state of Alabama nnto motion
in order to preserve the peace within its borders
Individual rights to life to liberty and to equal protection
under the law are guaranteed by the Constitution of the United
States in every state of the Union including the state of Alabama
And if this state or any other state i falls to act at atiy time
to protect the rights of individual citizens thtn it Is the duty and
the obligation of the United States government to step In and insure
that they are protected
Wo believe firmly In the principle of states rights as set forth
in the Constitution but we also believe that the rights of indivi
dual Americans as guaranteed by that same Constitution are just
as Important and considerably more sacred
COUNTRY IDITOI
HE CAMPAIGN to elect a successor to Lyndon Jonnson In the
U S Senate has been another nightmare on the Texas political
scene comparable only to the rise of the corrupt and prolonged ad
min tration of Allan Shivers
Texas had her opportunity on April 4 to send a good man to
Washington but petty bickering among the liberals and moderates
gave us two Ultra conservatives in the runoff
couNinr iotoh
jrE TOLD OUR Democratic readers after April 1 that their
choice was to hold their noses and vote for Dlakley or go
fishing on May 27 We then planned to forget about Texas politics
until after the runoff trying hard to forget reality The fact was we
didnt know for sure what we intended to do vote for Blakley or
stay at home
About two weeks ago a Dallas newspaper reported editorially that
we were supporting Tower even quoting us as calling him a good
Republican
Almost before we had time to cool off a Dallas radio station phoned
to check the published report After denying any intention of voting
for a Kepublcan we Were faced with the question Are you going to
support Blakley Thorc In the radio interview our back was to the
wall and we had to make a decision So we deoMed publicly then and
there that Wr were going fishing come election day
We dont want any anonymous letters accusing us of bolting the
party because we didnt support Blakley The special election was
not a Democratic primary There was nothing on the April 4 ballot
6uch as I am a Pcmocrat and pledge myself to support the nominees
of this primary It was a free for nil In which no one ran as a
representative of a party but as n Individual
Neither do we want any lectures on the morality of casting a
vote regardless of how we vote We hate these public service announcements
such as It doesnt matter how you vote just vote
Just as it Isnt necessary to express ones opinion on every subject on
every occasion sometimes It is wise to sit back and let those with
more definite convictions decido an issue when one lacks such convictioncoumir toiion
EVER DID WE expect to see the day when we would secretly be
hoping for a Republican victory in Texas But Saturday night as re
ports began to trickle In without planning it we found ourself pulling
for Tower We did this in spite of the fact that Tower is a lightweight
both politically and intellectually He has little if anything on
the ball His reputation in Wichita Falls is poor His professional associates
have little respect for his ability Yet he is just what Texas
Democrats deserve
When John Tower resigned as assistant professor at Midwestern
University he was earning less than 5000 annualy no disgrace but It
indicates his professional calibre
< OUNT Y IDITOI
JT IS TO BE HOPED that outside observers will understand that
things are not always what they seem to be in Texas pelts Republicans
like to believe that Texas is overwhelmingly conservative
and that Towers election Is a repudiation of the Democratic party
in general and the Kennedy administration In particular
On the contrary Tower has only the stupidity of Texas Democrats
to credit for his victory
COUNTIT IDITOI
EXAMINATION of the facts of life will quickly disprove this Republican
thinking Last November Lyndon Johnson who by that
time had been dubbed a wildeyed liberal decisively defeated Republican
Tower in the Senate race by a 400000 vote margin The
Kennedy haters and Conservatives had their chance then to elect a
Republican senator and would have had they had the strength Tower
lost to a moderate Democrat running under a libera label in November
While defeating an ultra conservative running as a conservative Democrat
in May
Had Tower faced a bonafide Democrat or a liberal or moderate
affiliated with the present administration in Saturdays runoff it could
have been said with some Justification that the Tower vote was a
