Departmental requirements for the BS in Communication
Disorders are as follows:

2. Research tool, 3 hrs., chosen from the following:
ISQS 324, SOCI 315, PSYC 311, or JMC 420.

Human Communication
Departmental requirements for the BS in Human
Communication are as follows:
1. Communication Core requirements, 21 hrs.: COMS

Communication Disorders
COMP 101 Sign Language for Deaf (3-0-1), fall, spring. Total
communication with emphasis on signing for communication with the
deaf. Lab fee: $25.
COMP 202 Advanced Sign Language for the Deaf (3-0-2),* fall,
spring. An advanced study of Ameslan, language and psychology of the
deaf culture. Prerequisite: COMP 101 or permission of the instructor.
Lab fee: $25.
COMMP 225 Voice and Phonetics (3-0-3), spring. A study of voice
production, speech sound formation and articulatory patterns. Includes
experience in transcription with the International Phonetic Alphabet and
practical application.
COMP 235 Introduction to Speech Pathology (3-0-3), fall, spring.
An introduction to speech-language pathology as an applied behavioral
science in human communication sciences and disorders.
COMP 319 Acoustics and Voice Science (3-0-3), Maymester only.
Wave motion and sound production, sound perception and measurement,
voice production, speech synthesis, hearing, acoustic phonetics, electronic
sound production. Designed to meet the needs of majors in
communication disorders. Same as PHYS 319. Course fee: $10.
COMP 330 Normal Language Development (3-0-3), spring. Study
of the normal acquisition of language with emphasis on language content,
form, semantics and the scope of grammar.
COMP 334 Whole Language and Pragmaticism (3-0-3), on
demand. A study of linguistic pragmaticism; methodology in the
assessment of language and language disorders with emphasis on theory,
evaluation, and remediation.
COMP 352 Audiology (3-0-3), fall. A survey of the science of hearing
assessment and auditory functioning and of the social and clinical
endeavors centered in problems of hearing loss and deafness. Includes
practicum in hearing screening and basic audiometric testing. Course fee:
$25.
COMP 353 Hearing Rehabilitation (3-0-3), spring. Theory and
practice of acoustic amplification, auditory training, speech reading,
speech habilitation, and educational considerations for the hearing
impaired. Educational programming, cultural influences and social
adjustments for the deaf. Course fee: $25.
