Communication
The Department of Communication in the College of Arts
and Sciences offers the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication
Disorders and Human Communication and the
Bachelor of Science Degree in Communication Disorders
and Human Communication. The department also works
with the Department of Education to offer teacher certification
(see the Department of Education section). Current
faculty members are listed at the back of the catalog.
INTRODUCTION
The Department of Communication recognizes the
increasingly vital role of communication in modern society.
Communication permeates all social, corporate, civic,
educational, and religious situations, and the demand for
individuals skilled in its use continues to grow. A basic
course in human communication is required for most
degrees at ACU.
Instructional facilities are located in Coffee Hall in the Don
H. Morris Center and include well equipped classrooms,
audiometric testing suites, speech-language pathology
therapy rooms, videotaping equipment, and access to computers.
Highly qualified Christian faculty, many known
nationally and internationally, are dedicated to teaching,
research, and helpful interaction with their students.Division of Communication Disorders
The communication disorders curriculum is directed
toward providing pre-professional training for students
planning careers in speech-language pathology, audiology,
and education of the hearing impaired. Classroom and
laboratory experience is provided, in the ACU Speech and
Hearing Clinic, the Voice Institute of West Texas, local
hospitals, rehabilitation centers, special schools, and public
schools.
The program conforms to the certification and accreditation
requirements of the American Speech-Language and
Hearing Association.
Speech-language pathologists provide professional services
to the language, speech, and hearing handicapped in such
facilities as public and private schools, hospitals, rehabilitation
centers, nursing care facilities, private practice, state
schools, university clinics, and state and local health
agencies.
Division of Human Communication
The focus of Human Communication is on information
management and interaction. Students successfully
completing a major in Human Communication prepare
themselves for a variety of careers where people and
information come together.
Students interested in pulpit ministry should see the
College of Biblical Studies for the preaching ministry
degree.A major in Human Communication requires 36 hours of
Human Communication courses, broken into 18 hours of
core requirements, and 18 hours of selected Human
Communication. A student may emphasize one of four
areas within Human Communication. Each area suggests
several supporting elective courses that should be discussed
with an adviser when one plans a major. Of the 36 hours
required, 18 must be advanced hours.
General Departmental Requirements
Majors in communication are required to make a grade of
C or better in all courses in the department that count
toward their degrees.
