Admission Requirements 11
Applicants are encouraged to take one of these tests at the
earliest possible date. Prospective students cannot enroll
unless ACT or SAT scores are on file. Students who take
the SAT and receive less than 1120 as a combined score
will be required to take the ACT also.
5. Letters of Reference
An applicant should arrange to have two letters of
reference sent to the Director of Admissions: one from a
teacher in the school most recently attended and one from
a personal acquaintance (such as a minister, employer, or
counselor) who is not related. These letters should
evaluate the candidate's potential to succeed at ACU
and to contribute to the campus environment.
6. Room Reservations
Experience has shown that students who live on campus
are more likely to succeed than students who live off
campus. Students are, therefore, encouraged to live on
campus. They must live in campus housing unless they are
married, are 21 years of age or older, are living with
parents, or have junior standing (having completed at least
60 semester hours).
To reserve a dormitory room, send a $100 deposit along
with the Housing Request Form from the application
packet to the Housing Office, ACU Station, Box 8036,
Abilene, Texas 79699.REGISTRATION
Newly admitted freshmen who have submitted all required
materials may register early for classes by calling 1-800677-8684,
or they may register in person through an
adviser on campus.
All admission records, transcripts, test scores, fees and
deposits, and Student Health Records must be on file
before students can enroll and attend classes. If for valid
reasons, however, students who have been offered
admission cannot fully comply with this requirement, they
may, at the discretion of the Director of Admissions, be
admitted on a temporary basis. It is the responsibility of
these students to see that any missing items are supplied
before the next preregistration period (usually four to six
weeks into the semester); otherwise they may be dropped
from classes and not be permitted to register for the
new term.
NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION
All new students with fewer than 15 semester hours must
attend a new student orientation during the summer.
Three separate sessions are scheduled each summer, one
each month in June, July, and August. This is a time for
discussion of various aspects of university life, including
academic course planning, student life and financial aid.
Key activities for students are freshman testing, credit-byexam
and placement testing, and registration for classes.
Special sessions are also scheduled for parents at each new
student orientation. Information is provided on academics,
finances, financial aid, and campus life. All parents are
encouraged to attend one of these programs. Details will
be mailed to prospective students and parents in the spring
after students have applied for admission.
Transfer students with 15 semester hours or more should
attend a one-day transfer orientation which will be
scheduled just before enrollment for classes.
Welcome Week
Welcome Week is a unique experience planned especially
for new freshman and transfer students. It is scheduled in
August between new student orientation and the beginning
of fall classes. ACU's Welcome Week gives the student a
chance to get a head start on college life with some
pointers from upperclassmen who have been there. The
program is designed to get students mentally, socially and
spiritually ready for the exciting year ahead. Intramurals
and other activities give students a chance to get
acquainted and enjoy friendly competition. All new
students should attend.
