either the Aptitude Test of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) or on the Miller
Analogies Test (MAT). For other admissions requirements, please refer to "General
Regulations" in the front section of this catalog.

The student may choose one of the following:
1. A 30-hour program including a thesis or an equivalent project.
2. A 36-hour program of course work prescribed by a committee, selected within the first
six months of a student's study.

either the completion of 6 hours of sophomore-level courses in the language or by an
examination approved by the department.
Examination:
The candidate for the master's degree in English will take a one-hour oral examination
over the thesis, as well as a written examination over his course of study and over a reading
list provided by the department.
The graduate advisor will supply each candidate with a "Guide to English Graduate
