Department of History

The courses in the graduate program in history are intended to prepare students
for careers of teaching in schools and colleges, and to train historical specialists for
various branches of government, business, and social service. The program leads to
the Master of Arts Degree.
The Aptitude Test of the Graduate Record Examinations is required for
admission into this program. For other admissions requirements, please refer to
"General Regulations" in the front section of this catalog.
Departmental Requirements for the Degree
Prerequisite:
A Bachelor of Arts Degree or the equivalent with a major or minor of not less
than 24 hours in history, including six hours in elementary American history, and 12
hours of advanced history.
Programs:
There are two programs possible for an MA in history. In both of these, students
must take courses in both American and European fields.
1. Pure history.
30 hours in this subject, including a six-hour thesis.
2. History with a minor.
At least 18 hours in history, including a six-hour thesis. (As much as 24 hours
in history could be taken.) A minor of six to 12 hours, or two minors of six
hours each. Total program must include a minimum of 30 graduate hours.
Foreign Language:
A reasonable proficiency in either German, French, or Spanish is required, to be
evidenced in one of the following ways:
By submitting college credit equivalent to that required for the Bachelor of
Arts Degree in this institution, or
By demonstrating ability to read literature of the major field in the language,
the examining committee to be composed of one representative from the
Department of Foreign Languages and one representative from the candidate's
major department.

The rivalry between the great powers, the decline of Turkey, the Berlin-Baghdad Railway, the Suez
Canal project, and the Jewish-Arab problem.

From the beginning through the Civil War.
5352. American Diplomacy.
From the Civil War to the present.
5355. Social and Economic U.S.
