Department of Biology
Head of Department and Graduate Advisor: Clark Stevens
The graduate courses and research in biology include study in the fields of botany,
cell physiology, virology, ecology, endocrinology, immunology, parasitology,
microbiology, physiology, and genetics, leading to the Master of Science Degree. A
major is available in either general biology, microbiology, or wildlife biology.
The Aptitude Test of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is required for
admission into the programs in this department. For other admissions requirements,
please refer to "General Regulations" in the front section of this catalog.
Prerequisites for the Degree:
A Bachelor of Science Degree or the equivalent, including specific undergraduate
course requirements, as indicated below for each program.
Foreign Language Requirement:
For the programs in general biology and microbiology: A reasonable proficiency
in a foreign language is required, to be evidenced in one of the following ways: (1) by
submitting college credit equivalent to that required for the bachelor's degree in
biology in this institution; or(2) by demonstrating ability to read scientific literature of
the major field in the language, the examining committee to be composed of one
representative from the Department of Foreign Languages and one representative
from the Department of Biology.
For the program in wildlife biology: The foreign language requirement is waived
for the majors in wildlife biology who include four hours of biostatistics in their
undergraduate or graduate curriculum.
Requirements for the Degree in General Biology
Specific Prerequisites:
From 18 to 24 hours in undergraduate biology. A year of Organic Chemistry is
recommended.
Major:
A minimum of 18 hours (including thesis) in biology, of which at least 12 hours
must be at the 6000-level.
Minor:
A minor of at least six semester hours must be completed in either chemistry,
physics, or mathematics. The remaining six hours may be selected from the major or
minor fields or both. Secondary school teachers may, with prior approval from the
department, elect a second minor of six hours from the field of education.
Requirements for the Degree in Microbiology
Specific Prerequisites:
Microbiology, organic chemistry, general physics, pre-calculus or elementary
functions, and biostatistics (unless presented for graduate credit).
Major:
A minimum of 21 hours, including a thesis, must be completed in the major field.
