Discusses the energetics, pathways, and mechanisms of metabolic reactions of carbohydrates, lipids,
fats, proteins, nucleic acids, and other cellular constituents with particular reference to enzyme and
coenzyme systems. Prerequisite: Chemistry 3450 or consent of instructor. Usually not credited
without completion of Biology 5174. (Same as Chemistry 5374).
5174. Biochemistry Laboratory II (1-3).
Continues with biochemical laboratory methods, including enzyme kinetics, end-group analysis of
peptides, electrophoresis of proteins, and use of radio-isotopes in the study of biochemical pathways.
Prerequisite: Credit or registration in Biology 5374. (Same as Chemistry 5174).
5380. General Histology (2-3).
Detailed microscopic anatomy of the tissues and organs of higher vertebrates.
5382. Advanced Wildlife Biology.
Technical methods employed in wildlife management, including production movements, effects on
environment, cover manipulations, population controls, management of food supplies, harvesting
procedures, competition, and predation. (Same as Ag. 5382).
5483. Biostatistics (3-3).
A survey of statistical theory and methodology as applied to quantitative biological data. Practice
required to analyze research data will be provided in laboratory sessions.
5484. Embryology (3-3).
Gametogenesis, maturation, fertilization, cleavage, differentiation, and the early stages of
development of the frog, the chick, and the pig.
5385. Parasitology (2-3).
Parasitic protozoa and helminths, especially those of medical importance, with emphasis on life
cycles, control and host parasite relationships.
5487. Mycology.
Mycology includes the morphology, physiology and taxonomy of fungi as saprophytes, symbionts
and parasites. Medical applications will include human mycoses and clinical laboratory techniques.
