Foreign Languages 77
Foreign Languages
The Department of Foreign Languages in the College of
Liberal and Fine Arts offers the Bachelor of Arts Degree.
Current faculty members are listed at the end of this section.INTRODUCTION
Learning is becoming, and languages are your key to becoming
a citizen of the world. There is deep satisfaction
in knowing you can communicate with millions outside
your own country.
By learning one or more foreign languages you can qualify,
or enhance your qualifications, for many challenging
careers:
Teaching. Our nation needs outstanding foreign language
teachers and scholars in universities, colleges, and secondary
schools.
Business. A major combining business and a foreign language
can lead careers with multinational corporations, in
international banking or accounting, in hotel management,
or in the export-import business.
Government Service. Important jobs in the Armed Services,
the Department of State, the Department of Commerce,
and the International Communication Agency
require proficiency in foreign languages. You should,
however, supplement your language preparation by courses
in business management, economics, and communications. These areas by no means exhaust the possibilities. Journalists,
librarians, writers, researchers, doctors, nurses,
police officers, social workers, missionaries, and many
others often find foreign language skills essential.
The person who knows a foreign language has an added
dimension. Language expands and heightens the pleasure
of travel, of good literature, and of the arts. It fosters a
sense of shared humanity. Perhaps you will find these "intangible"
benefits the most rewarding of all.
As a foreign language major, you may choose either the
BA or the BSEd degree in French, German, or Spanish.
The BA means maximum exposure to the language and is
recommended if you are planning to do graduate work.
The Bachelor of Science in Education Degree (BSEd) in
French, German, or Spanish is offered by the Department
of Education for students who wish to teach in secondary
schools. See the Department of Education section of the
catalog.BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE

Departmental Requirements
If you have had two or more years of a language in high
school, you should be able to earn college credit by examination.

in French, German, or Spanish during your senior
year of high school. If this is impossible, the test can be arranged
through ACU.

sufficient advanced placement by examination, he may
have to take up to 14 hours of elementary and intermediate
work as elective hours.
Abilene Christian University offers a cooperative program
in Spanish with Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry
College. Students planning to major in Spanish are encouraged
to complete three hours of advanced work in
Spanish language or literature at either HSU or McMurry.
Departmental requirements for the BS in French, German,
or Spanish are as follows:
1. Principal language courses, 24 hrs.: FLFR, FLGE, or
FLSP, advanced-level courses.
