to linguistics, with the emphasis varied to suit the needs of the class.

Teaching of English and Reading
ENGL 207 Guided Study: Teaching of English and Reading (3-0-3)*,
on demand. Prerequisites: ENGL 111 and 112 or the equivalent.
ENGL 407 Guided Study: Teaching of English and Reading (3-0-3)*,
on demand. Prerequisite: 6 hours of sophomore English.
ENGL 447 Topics in Teaching of English and Reading (3-0-3)*, on
demand. Prerequisite: 6 hours of sophomore English.
ENGL 459 Teaching English: Grades 6-12 (3-0-3), on demand. Specialized
instruction in the genres and methods of teaching oral and written
composition, grammar, and literature in secondary schools. Required
for English certification. Prerequisite: 6 hours of advanced
English or consent of the instructor.
ENGL 549 Teaching English as a Second Language (3-0-3), on
demand. An introduction to the methods and techniques of teaching
English to speakers of other languages. Prerequisite: ENGL 560 Advanced
Grammar.
ENGL 550 Literature for Children (3-0-3), fall, spring, summer. A
content reading course with special emphasis on historical backgrounds
and trends in both traditional and contemporary literary selections. Includes
various genres and critical analysis. Required for Elementary
Education majors. Prerequisite: 6 hours of sophomore English.
ENGL 551 Young Adult Literature (3-0-3), spring. Reading theory
and material for students of the middle school and early high school
years. Cannot be counted toward a major or second teaching field in
English. Required for Elementary Education majors with an English
specialization; also required for Secondary Reading Specialists. Prerequisite:
6 hours of sophomore English.
ENGL 557 Composition Workshop (3-0-3), on demand. Practice in
writing assignments and projects based upon recent composition
theories. Designed principally for public school teachers. May be taken
Pass/Non-Pass only. Prerequisite: 6 hours of sophomore English.
Institute of Intensive English
The Institute of Intensive English (IIE) currently offers
two levels of instruction in English as a Second Language:
High-intermediate and Advanced. High-intermediate students
study English for 15 hours each week, and Advanced
students study English for 10 hours each week.
Since the program is intensive, IIE students are not permitted
to study other academic courses in the university
until they meet the minimum TOEFL requirements noted
earlier on p. 15 of this catalog.
The IIE is designed to meet the needs of international students.
The curriculum in the Institute is intended to
produce communicative proficiency in both oral and written
English. Placement is determined by a proficiency
exam developed by the university and offered at the beginning
and end of each eight-week term. Terms usually
begin in early September, late October, early January, and
mid March.
The IIE, in cooperation with the Department of Communication,
offers a free Pronunciation Lab for all IIE students.
Students receive one-on-one articulation
instruction and pronunciation practice with a native
English speaker skilled in accent improvement for thirtyminute
sessions twice weekly.ENGL 031 High-intermediate Reading and Writing: Business and
Economics (25-0-25), on demand. Reading and writing assignments
revolve around a central theme (international trade, accounting, international
finance, and marketing). The theme changes each term. Prerequisite:
450 TOEFL
ENGL 033 High-intermediate Oral Communication (25-0-25), on
demand. Oral communication is developed through in-depth analyses of
social issues. Listening comprehension is practiced through extensive
use of audio and video lessons on current issues. Many experiential
learning opportunities are provided regularly. Prerequisite: 450
TOEFL
ENGL 034 High-intermediate Creative English (15-0-15) , on
demand. Oral and written language proficiency is developed through the
design, production, and participation in a variety of creative projects.
Prerequisite: 450 TOEFL.
ENGL 035 High-intermediate American Culture (1-0-1), on demand.
Oral and written language proficiency is developed through the analysis
of different aspects of the American culture and special cultural-adaptation
exercises and activities, many involving contact with Americans.
Prerequisite: 450 TOEFL
ENGL 036 High-intermediate Grammar (15-0-15), on demand.
Grammatical proficiency is developed through the examination of major
English sentence patterns and grammatical forms.
ENGL 041 Advanced Reading-and Writing: Business and
Economics (15-0-15), on demand. Reading and writing assignments
revolve around a central theme using articles and reports from major
news magazines and programs as well as professional journals. Themes
changing every eight-week term deal with current business and economic
issues of importance in the U. S. and the world. Prerequisite: 450
TOEFL.
ENGL 043 Advanced Oral Communication: Business and
Economics (1-0-1), on demand. The use and practice of oral communication
include (1) simulated negotiations between corporations and
(2) debates over case studies. Prerequisite: 450 TOEFL
ENGL 045 Advanced Academic Study Skills (1-0-1), on demand.
Research and writing skills are taught through the use of library resource
materials and formal research projects and assignments. Alternates with
ENGL 046. Prerequisite: 450 TOEFL
ENGL 046 Advanced Academic Study Skills (1-0-1), on demand. The
use of oral English in a variety of academic situations is discussed; and
practice in group discussions, individual speeches, presentations using
audio-visual aids, and debates is provided, in many cases involving
Americans. Alternates with ENGL 045. Prerequisite: 450 TOEFL
ENGL 047 Advanced Grammar for Academic Purposes (15-0-15),
on demand. Various grammatical structures are discussed and analyzed
as they are used or occur in different academic disciplines and the writings
of those disciplines. Exercises similar to those found on the
TOEFL are used and discussed. Prerequisite: 450 TOEFL
