The numbers following course titles indicate (1) hours of
lecture per week, (2) hours of laboratory per week, and
(3) semester credit hours. An asterisk following these
three figures indicates that the course carries variable or
alternative credit and that the figures represent the maximum
variation. In general, credit hours for these courses

Division of General and Special Education
EDUC 160 Introduction to Teaching Reading (3-0-3), fall, spring. An
introduction to the professional education of reading teachers. Required
of elementary and secondary education majors who specialize in reading.
Should be taken in the freshman or sophomore year.
EDUC 210 Computers in Education (2-2-3), fall, spring. Required of
Education majors. Includes a study of the use of computers in education
with laboratory applications. Course fee: $30.
EDUC 230 Human Development (3-0-3), on demand. A study of the
human life cycle from conception to the grave with emphasis on
childhood, adolescence, sexuality, parenting skills, and aging. Designed
for nurses, teachers, and others in areas of human service.
EDUC 250 Reading Improvement (2-0-2), spring. A general education
course which develops speed reading and comprehension. Designed for
personal development. Course fee: $25.
EDUC 311 Perspectives in American Education (3-0-3), fall, spring,
summer. A foundation course in professional education, including historical
and philosophical backgrounds of the profession. Twenty-five
hours of field experience are included. Students complete formal application
for teacher education in class. Note screening requirements.
EDUC 321 Educational Psychology (3-0-3), fall, spring. A study of
child and adolescent development, learning theories, and measurement
techniques. EDUC 311 and 321 are required before other upperdivision
education classes. EDUC 311 and 321 can be taken concurrently.

EDUC 341 Educating Special Populations (3-0-3), fall, spring, summer.
An introduction to special education and multi-ethnic populations.
Prerequisites: EDUC 311 and 321.
EDUC 362 Reading in Content Areas for Reading Specialists (3-0-3),
spring. Designed to emphasize various teaching and learning skills in
content area reading for elementary or secondary majors who specialize
in reading. Prerequisites: EDUC 160 and 563.
EDUC 572 Principles of Guidance (3-0-3), on demand. An introduction
to the field of guidance services in the school. Same as PSYC 572.
EDUC 573 Psychology of Exceptional Children (3-0-3), fall, summer.
A survey of the nature and needs of exceptional children, such as the
mentally retarded, gifted, and emotionally disturbed.
EDUC 574 The Emotionally Disturbed Child (3-0-3), spring, summer.
A study of social and emotional deviance in children including intervention
and prevention strategies.
EDUC 576 Psychology of Mental Retardation (3-0-3), spring. The nature
and characteristics of mental retardation and its social, emotional,
and cognitive aspects.
EDUC 577 Methods of Teaching the Learning Disabled (3-0-3), fall,
summer. A survey of teaching children and adolescents with learning disabilities.
Prerequisites: EDUC 311 and 321.
EDUC 581 Teaching the Mentally Retarded and Special Needs
Learner (3-0-3), spring. A study of adapted and modified curriculum
for special education students. Twenty-five hours of field experiences
are included. Prerequisites: EDUC 311 and 321.EDUC 400 Guided Study (3-0-3)*.
EDUC 550 Development of Reading Materials (3-0-3), fall, spring. A
course emphasizing the development and organization of reading
materials adapted to needs of public school students. Prerequisites:
EDUC 311, 321, and 563.
EDUC 380 Problems in Reading (3-0-3), fall, spring. A course
designed for elementary or secondary majors who have a reading
specialization. Individual tutoring of children is required. This course
should be taken near the end of the program. Course fee: $25. Prerequisites:
EDUC 160, 311, 321, and 563.
EDUC 590 Reading for Gifted Students (3-0-3), fall. A course emphasizing
methods and materials for teaching reading to those identified
as gifted and talented. Designed for elementary or secondary majors
who have a specialization in reading. Prerequisites: EDUC 160, 311,
321, and 563.
EDUC 495 Student Teaching: Special Education (1-9-4), fall, spring.
Special Education student teaching is all-day for six weeks during the
senior year. The other six weeks of the semester may be used for a
second five-hour student teaching assignment. Formal application for
student teaching is made with the Director of Field Experiences.
Credit/No-Credit grade.
EDUC 496 Student Teaching: Speech Pathology (1-19-9), fall, spring.
Student teaching in Speech Pathology is an all-day, twelve week experience
in the senior year. Formal application for student teaching is
made with the Director of Field Experiences. Credit/No-Credit grade.
EDUC 568 Tests and Measurements (3-0-3), on demand. Provides experiences
that will enable a student to understand statistical measures,
prepare teacher made tests, and use standardized instruments.
Division of Elementary Education
EDUC 563 Methods of Teaching Developmental Reading (3-0-3),
fall, spring. The course deals with the developmental reading process, K12.
Required of all elementary majors and all secondary majors who specialize
in reading. Twenty-five hours of field experiences are included.
For those who are specializing in reading, it should also be taken after
EDUC 160. Prerequisites: EDUC 311 and 321.
EDUC 565 Teaching Social Studies in Elementary School (3-0-3),
fall, spring, summer. A course designed to familiarize students with the
whole spectrum of social studies with particular emphasis on essential
skills and units. Prerequisites: EDUC 311, 321, and 341.
EDUC 566 Education of Young Children (3-0-3), fall. A required
course for students who desire the kindergarten endorsement. A study
of theory and practice in the education of young children. Twenty-five
hours of field experience in public schools are included. Prerequisites:
EDUC 311 and 321.
EDUC 570 Teaching Mathematics in Elementary Grades (3-0-3), fall,
spring, summer. A study of techniques of teaching mathematics with applications
of various teaching innovation. Prerequisites: EDUC 311 and
321.
EDUC 571 Curriculum for Early Childhood Education (3-0-3),
spring. A required course for students who desire the kindergarten endorsement.
A study of kindergarten curriculum with methods for implementation.
Micro teaching with kindergarten children is included.
Prerequisites: EDUC 311, 321, and 566.
EDUC 431 Management and Methods Seminar: Elementary (3-0-3),
fall, spring. A concentrated study of classroom management, motivation,
leadership, curriculum, and planning. This course meets daily for three
weeks prior to student teaching and requires twenty-five hours of field
work in the classroom of the student teaching assignment. Prerequisites:
EDUC 311, 321,341, 563, and 570.
EDUC 490 Student Teaching: Kindergarten (1-94), fall, spring. The
culmination of undergraduate teacher education, student teaching includes
directed teaching and related activities in public schools. Kindergarten
student teaching is equivalent to all-day for six weeks during the
senior year. The other six weeks of the semester may be used for a
second student teaching assignment. Formal application for student
