14 Academic Information
educational experience with less emphasis on grades and
grade points. The following rules apply.
1. A maximum of 12 hours may be taken credit/no-credit,
and these must be courses which are electives in the
student's degree plan, that is, electives outside the
major field of study.
2. The student receives credit for a "CR" grade, but the
"CR" and "NC" grades are not counted in computing
the GPA.
3. No courses in which a student has received "F' may be
repeated on the credit/no-credit basis.
4. A student may change a course to credit/no-credit in
the Registrar's Office within the first two weeks of
the semester. The teacher will give the student a
regular grade at the end of the semester, but a grade
of "D" or better will be recorded as "CR."
Examinations
Final examinations are given the last four days of each
long semester and the last day of each summer term. Examinations
are never given in advance.
Credit by Examination
If your past grades or test scores indicate that you have
outstanding academic potential, it is possible to be exempt
from or to receive college credit in certain courses. No
credit by examination will be awarded in a general subject
area in which you have passed or failed a course.A maximum of 30 semester hours earned by examination
may be counted towards a degree. All hours of credit
earned, however, will be listed on your transcript. No tuition
is charged for credit by examination, but a recording
fee of $10 per course is charged.
Grades are not assigned to credits earned by examination,
and GPA is not affected. Unsuccessful attempts to earn
credit by examination are not shown on transcripts.

Honors and the Honors Program
Honors at Abilene Christian University fall into two
categories: (1) the recognition of outstanding students at
graduation and at the end of each semester and (2) a special
honors program which qualified students may enter.
Honors at graduation are based on a student's GPA for
courses taken at ACU. A student whose average is at
least 3.4 is graduated cum laude (with honor), one whose
GPA is at least 3.6 is graduated magna cum laude (with
high honor), and one whose GPA is at least 3.8 is
graduated summa cum laude (with highest honor). A student
must complete at least 50 percent of all course work
at ACU to graduate with honor.
If a student has a current GPA of at least 3.45 on at least
12 hours during a semester, he is included in the Dean's
Honor Roll for that semester.
There are two tracks in the Honors Program: University
Honors and Departmental Honors. Both tracks provide
enriched courses and activities for academically talented
students. (See details in the Honors Program section of
this catalog.)
Questions about the Honors Program or about the Junior
Scholars Program (in which high school juniors and
seniors take classes at ACU) should go to the Director of
the Honors Program, who also serves as liaison to the
Talent Identification Program for gifted/talented seventhgraders
in sixteen states.
Library
The Margaret and Herman Brown Library, built in 1970
and enlarged in 1984, is at the heart of the academic
program at ACU. The library supports the academic
programs of the university and also provides current
general reading, listening, and viewing experiences for students,
faculty and other patrons. Special exhibits,
programs and lectures sponsored by the library throughout
the year help to make it one of the cultural centers of the
campus.
