Department Head
The Department of Chemistry conducts a
four-year program of standard course work that
leads both to the Bachelor of Science and
Bachelor of Arts degrees. The Bachelor of Science
degree is designed to meet the acceditation standards
of the Committee on Professional Training
of the American Chemical Society, thereby providing
thorough preparation for the student who
plans to go directly to a position as a professional
chemist or to begin graduate study. The Bachelor
of Arts degree requires less professional
training but provides opportunity for a correspondingly
broader liberal arts background. By
proper scheduling, a student fulfilling the premedical
and pre-dental requirements can obtain
a B.A. degree in chemistry with recommendation
of biology as the minor.
In addition to the regular classroom schedule,
virtually every chemistry faculty member is working
on an individual research project. Some of
these projects are supported by outside granting
agencies and foundations and provide financial
assistance to students who are especially qualified
for part-time research work. During the
past several years a relatively large number of
students have participated in research projects.
Most of them have gone on to obtain graduate
degrees and pursue careers in research. Other
part-time positions for students involve service
as stockroom attendants and laboratory assistants.
Several scholarships are available to both
incoming and advanced students. Otto Foster
