The study of the Bible as God's word is at
the heart of the curriculum of Abilene Christian
College and is indeed the reason for the existence
of the college. An education without a
knowledge of the spiritual is sadly lacking, since
only the information and strength derived from
a knowledge of the word of God can furnish the
world-view and the sense of meaning and purpose
so necessary to the happy and useful life that
was meant for man.
Graduates of the college from all the departments
must take two and one-half years of
courses in Bible, with all but one course required
to be a study of the Bible text itself. Bible majors
are expected to take intensively structured freshman
and sophomore courses, so that as future
ministers and church workers they will get not
only the content but specific methods, inspiration,
and other helps. An overnight retreat is held
each semester to build rapport and Christian fellowship
between faculty and "major" students.
The department has over 24 different instructors
with 18 at present holding an earned
doctorate from a leading university or seminary.
Practically all of the faculty have, at one time
or other, served in the local ministry of a church,
several have published books and articles, served
as editors, and have been involved in other types
of publication. Some are internationally known
in scholarly circles, having read papers at international
society meetings, and/or published their
writings in international journals and books.
