pre-professional
programs
Abilene Christian College offers several outstanding
pre-professional programs leading to the
various health professions, engineering, and law.
The pre-professional college courses are available
at ACC and qualify you to apply for study at the
professional school of your choice.
ACC students regularly enter such health
professions as medicine, dentistry, veterinary
medicine, optometry, pharmacy, medical technology,
nursing, physical therapy, dental hygiene,
and others. You are strongly encouraged to obtain
literature from the professional school you
hope to attend in order to verify that school's entrance
requirements.
pre-nursing
ACC offers the pre-nursing courses required
for entering the various schools of nursing. The
amount and type of prerequisite courses will depend
upon the kind of nursing program which
you desire to enter. Two types of programs are
described below to illustrate some of the options
available.
(1) Non-Degree Program. The Mary Meek
School of Nursing at Hendrick Hospital in
Abilene offers a fully accredited non-degree
program leading to the R.N. This two-year
training at the hospital must be preceeded
by at least one year of college study. The
required college courses include: two semesters
of biology, including one semester of
human anatomy and physiology; six semester
hours of English; four semester hours of
chemistry; and three semester hours each in
general physchology, sociology, microbiology,
and child growth and development.(2) Degree Program. For the bachelor of science
degree in nursing, the University of
Texas Nursing School requires two years
(60 semester hours) of lower division courses
which can be taken at Abilene Christian
College prior to transfer to the University
of Texas Nursing School. (Such schools are
located in Austin, El Paso, Fort Worth,
Galveston, Houston, and San Antonio.) The
required college courses include: three semester
hours each of anatomy and physiology,
microbiology, psychology, sociology,
growth and development, and statistics; six
semester hours of English, 12 semester
hours of history and government, and electives
to provide a minimum of 60 semester
hours.

ACC awards the bachelor's degree to certain
qualified students who have satisfactorily completed
three years of prescribed work at ACC
plus one year at a recognized professional school.
This arrangement has been used by students entering
the fields of medicine, dentistry, veterinary
medicine, medical technology, law, and engineering.pre medical, pre-dental,

The following courses will satisfy the 94 semester
hours of required work at ACC for the
Cooperative Bachelor of Science Degree to be
awarded after one year of successful work at the
respective professional school:
Biology-15 hours, to include general biology,
1401 and 1402; cell biology, 2412;
and at least 3 advanced hours.
Chemistry-20 hours, to include general
chemistry, 1411 and 1412; organic
chemistry, 2449 and 3450; and 4 more
advanced hours.14
