College Terms
and Student Life
What is a "Semester Hour"?
College credit is rated in semester hours -
16 one-hour class periods yielding one hour of
credit. For example, a class which meets three
hours a week for 16 weeks counts as a three hour
course. Further, two or three hours in the laboratory
equal one hour in the classroom.
Classification of Students
Completion of these requirements determines
classification.
Freshman-15 high school admission units
Sophomore-30 semester hours
Junior-60 semester hours
Senior-90 semester hours
Post Graduate-A bachelors degree and taking
undergraduate courses
Graduate-A bachelors degree and taking graduate
courses
Special, Non-Credit-Students admitted to a
course but without credit.
Examinations
Final examinations are given during the last
five days of each semester. Examinations are
never given in advance. If you must take a final
examination late, you must secure written permission
from the Dean of the College.
Grades
The standing and record of a student is
expressed in terms of grades and points according
to the following table:A: 4 grade points per semester hour
B: 3 grade points per semester hour
passing C: 2 grade points per semester hour
D: 1 grade point per semester hour
E or I: 0 grade points until removed
F, WP, WF: 0 grade points
Averages use hours attempted rather than
hours completed.
Definition of grading symbols-I, E, WP,
and WF
I-Incomplete work (given only for good
reason). It must be removed by completing
specified work by the sixth week of the succeeding
long-term semester.
E-Conditioned because of low grades. An
E may be removed by:
(1) Passing an exam specified by the instructor
during the fourth week of the succeeding
semester. If the exam is failed,
the grade becomes an F without an
opportunity for another exam;
(2) or, if the instructor so specifies, doing
work of a certain quality in the next
semester.
If you plan not to enroll in ACC during the
semester following the I or E grade and an
extension of removal time is desired, the Registrar
should be petitioned for an extension prior
to the fourth week of the succeeding semester.
Otherwise, the grade becomes an F at the end
of the semester.
WP-Withdrawal from a course, passing.
WF-Withdrawal from a course, failing.
Any withdrawal after 13th week is graded F.
Pass/Non-Pass Option
Undergraduate students who have sophomore
standing and a 2.0 GPA may take a limited
number of courses on a pass/non-pass basis.
The purpose of this is to allow the student to
take courses which will broaden his educational
experience with less emphasis on grades and
grade points. The following rules govern the
pass/non-pass.
1. A maximum of 12 hours may be taken
pass-non-pass, and these must be courses
which are electives in the student's degree
plan.7
