Requirements for Major in Mathematics
In addition to the six hours of freshman mathematics the student
must have credit for twenty-four hours of work, of which
twelve must be advanced. The selection must include Mathematics
351-352 (Calculus) or its equivalent. One year (at least six hours)
of physics is required. Majors in mathematics should minor in education,
chemistry, music, biology, physical education, or business
administration.
A student electing mathematics as a minor must include Mathematics
351-352 (Calculus) or its equivalent in the eighteen hours.
301-302-Freshman Mathematics.
The essentials of algebra through quadratic equations, simple
interest, progressions, binominal theorem, logarithms, compound
interest, insurance, annuities, stocks, bonds and sinking
funds.
313-314-Mathematical Analysis.
Brief review of algebra, the essentials of trigonometry, fundamental
analytic formulas, straight line, conic sections, simple
algebraic derivatives and integrals, tangents, and curve tracing.
Prerequisite: Mathematics 301-302, or at least three entrance
units from high school.
320-Advanced Analytic Geometry.
Transformation of coordinates, conics in general, higher plane
curves, polar curves, and the solid analytic geometry of planes,
lines, and surfaces. Prerequisite: Mathematics 313-314. Given
in alternate years. (Given on demand of eight or more).
321-Determinants.
Systems of linear equations, properties of determinants, minors,
factors, homogenous equations, sum and product of determinants,
and the matrix form. Prerequisite: Six hours of mathematics.
Given in alternate years. (Given on demand of eight or
more).
350-Theory of Equations.
Complex numbers, theorems on the roots of an equation, cubic
and quartic equations, isolation of real roots, approximate
methods for real roots, and symmetric functions. Prerequisite:
Twelve hours in mathematics, including Mathematics 313-314.
(Given on demand of five or more).
351-352-Calculus.
Limits, differentiations, and applications first semester. Integration,
special devices, applications, and partial differentiation
second semester. Prerequisite: Mathematics 313-314. This
course will count as three or six advanced hours if the student
has completed nine or twelve hours of mathematics before taking
it.
371-372-Differential Equations.
Solution of differential equations of physics, chemistry, and
engineering, and the study of properties of solutions. Prerequisite:
Mathematics 351-352. Given in 1942-'43.64
