OUR PRIDE
Our pride is not in our plant, the size and strength of our faculty,
or the standing of our institution in the educational world, but in our
product-our students. The business and professional men of Abilene,
the people where they go for athletic and other contests, our
visitors, and others tell us they are "different," more refined and cultured,
that they are clean and honest. Our purpose is to develop
CHRISTIAN men and women, real, genuine CHRISTIAN men and
women, CHRISTIAN not in doctrine and faith only, but CHRISTIAN
in character, in life. From what we can see and hear we have cause
to believe we are succeeding to a reasonable degree. Read this extract
from a letter written to us by the dean of a college where our boys
spent three days and played two games of baseball:
"The Abilene Christian College baseball team was here for two
games. The boys played clean baseball and conducted themselves in
such a manner as to make us proud of them for you. We have had
several college teams to visit us this season, but your boys are much
the manliest set of men we have had. If we had not been told they
were all Christians we would have known from their conduct that it
must be so."
A hotel that had decided to keep no more ball teams, after being
told they would have no trouble with our boys, took our baseball team
in. Here is the letter we received from the management:
"April 13, 1920.
"The President, Abilene Christian College, Abilene, Texas.
"Dear Sir: The boys composing the baseball team from your college
are now our guests, and I want to let you know how highly we
appreciate them. We have yet to entertain a more orderly, cleaner,
more gentlemanly group of young men.
"Of course, this should not be considered a compliment. Gentlemen
naturally conduct themselves so. But in comparison to other such
organizations that have stopped with us, we cannot refrain from expressing
ourselves in this connection.
"Be assured, sir, that there is a warm spot in our hearts for Abilene
Christian College and that the best we can secure will be at the
disposal of future representatives of your school.
"Very sincerely,
"THE BARKER HOTEL.
"Carl Odell, Manager."
We do not apologize for being proud of such boys; and our girls are
just as fine.
And we do not apologize for being proud of the spirit and training
that makes such boys and girls.21
