A new club has found its nestling place on the WTC
campus. This club is the first on this campus to be concerned
with the problems confronting a minority ethnic group. The;
man responsible for the formation of the club is Ted Martinez
Jr., instructor of business. Los Amigos is similar to clubs
being formed on college campuses throughout the south-
western United States.
Concept
The absence of self-awareness among the Mexican-
American people prompted the formation of this club. Major
goals of the club are to encourage persons to stave for
self-awareness and to help Mexican-American students to
become competitive, functioning members of society. Lib
Amigos seeks opportunities to co-operate actively with other
service organizations on campus as well as in the community.
One of the more pressing problems of concern to the en
is the percentage of Mexican-American dropouts in Snyder,
To help curb this waste of potentially creative individuals,
the club encourages as many students as possible to continue
their education and to compete academically.

The main target for the club, however, is thepromoto
and clarification of the "Chicanismo" concept. Unfortunatej
this concept has been misunderstood and^ consequently, ml
people are "turned off" at the mention of the word. Chicaffl
mo organizations have been ridiculed and labeled as raid
by some antagonists of "Chicanismo." According to Martina
this club's concept of "Chicanismo" can be defines
"creating pride in being a member of the Mexican-Amffleai
race and being bilingual." Los Amigos tries to do just that-
create pride in being part of the culture and heritage of ft
Mexican race. Martinez states that by creating pride n£
individual, that person's standards are elevated, and »
he will become a competitive, functioning person in M
facet of society.
The Advantage
A question arose as to whether the separation of a »«
into an organization is necessary to obtain the desired res#
In response to the question, Martinez said that the og
zation is necessary to giw the Mexican-American a s»
of participation in the attainment of desired goals as
as to provide them with a center of information. Marti#
further stated that in a society such as ours, orSamza
are achievers of goals and thus only through organization*
can goals be reached. Some clubs that exemplify this ar
Kiwanis, Lions, Masons, Jaycees, etc. Consequently,
chicanos to help themselves as well as society, they
organize.
Martinez added that if society learns to accept indivjau
according to their capabilities instead of as a membe
a sub-group of society, the need for such clubs as Los Anus
will cease.
What Do You Think?
A controversial subject such as chicanismo canno
justified in a discussion without bringing up the pros
cons from both sides. Because of the diversity of opW
and points, The Western Texan would like to ask yo
your thoughts on the subject of chicanismo. Please
your signed letters to editor Carla McCollum, Journ
Dept., room 7B-103, no later than March 6. Name w ^
held on request and as many letters as possible w
printed in the March issue. Please participate as your op»
will help us determine your reaction to chicanismo o
WTC campus.
