in the high plains in Texas

operation with the U S Depart
ment of Interior Geological Survey
It tells of the source of the
ground water the development of
wells for irrigation by years nnd
by districts since 1937 and the
effect that pumping has had on
the groundwater supply It includes
records of about 400T
measurements made periodically
selected ob

Most of these records were
started in 1937 a part in 1930
and a considerable number in

More than 30years ago it
was found that water could be
obtained from wells for irrigation
A development of well irrigation
of moderate proportion was started
about 1911 in the vicinities of
Plainview Hereford and Mulcshoe
This development continued with
varying success but without material
expansion until 1935 Since
193 the well irrigation has in
creascd rapidly In 1934 there
were approximately 300 irrigation
wells in the entire high plains
area in Texas In 1937 there were
1150 Irrigation wells in 1939
1700 and in 1940 more than 2000
About 100000 acies were irrigated
in 1937 200000 acres in 1930
230000 in 1939 and it is estimated
rom a partial inventory that 250
000 acres were irrigated in 1940
