FOCUS DECADE '90
The growth of Black affluence
What does being
affluent mean to you? At
what income level would
you consider yourself to
be affluent? What does it
mean to be wealthy?
Most people believe that
an income of $50,000
would put them in a
reasonable position.
The number of blacks in
this position has nearly
quadrupled in the last 20
years. Today, nearly one
in ten black families have
an income of $50,000 or
more.
A research report,
conducted by William
O'Hare of the Population
Reference Bureau • in
Washington, D.C.
provided some interesting
findings on Black
affluence. We present
these findings in light of
the new decade in which
we begin as an indication
of where we are going.
Personal
Characteristics
Affluent Blacks were
found not to differ from
any other affluent group.
They are likely to be
middle-aged, married,
well educated, and to
own their homes.
Most reached the
$50,000 threshold by
combining two incomes.
Only one per cent of
Black workers earned
more than $50,000.
