"Survivor" invades campus with Freshman Follies
T he 2001-02 freshman class showcased its talents
in the annual Freshman Follies, the allfreshmen
event that was almost cancelled this
year.
The terrorist attacks on America left a stunned
Phyllis Wilson debating whether or not to continue
with the show.
Wilson, student program director, said she felt the
show would be a healing experience in the days
following the attack.
And so the show wenton.
One participating
freshman saw
Follies as a moral
booster for
everyone involved.Braid Sharp,
broadcast journalism
major from
Abilene, said Follies
brought the class
together after the tragedy.
"It was a therapeutic
way to lift people up
through humor," Sharp
said.The shows theme,
"Survivor: The Rainforest,"
parodied the CBS
television show "Survivor."
The show places a group of strangers on an isolated
island to see who can last the longest. Alongwith incorporating the theme from the television
show, Follies rented the backdrop from the show's
conclusion party. Follies also parodied celebrities like
Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Gandhi.
Wilson said Freshman Follies made changes this
year to get away from the freshman stereotype like
eating in the Bean and gaining
weight. But some things never
Ln B n change.
Residence hall acts, individual
performances and
acting troops continued
to entertain parents
with song
and dance
ensembles.
Residence hall
floors imitated
animals, butterflies
and coyotes to
support the theme.
Many parents and
friends traveled to
ACU, selling out Cullen
Auditorium to watch roughly 800 freshmen
participate in the show.
Linda Browning, freshman undeclared major
from Tyler, was involved in several acts.
"I love to perform and meet people," Browning
said. "It was a great way to incorporate both."
