FUN,
Fall Dinner Theatre
T he Theatre Department began its
season with its Fall Dinner Theatre
performance of Side by Side by
Sondheim, a musical revue of Steven
Sondheim's composition.
Students showcased their talent in a
collection of music by Steven Sondheim,
a well-known modern lyricist of Broadway
shows that include West Side Story,
Gypsy and The Forum.
The musical revue incorporated
songs by Sondheim from his Broadway
performances. Each song was set apart
by dialogue that introduced the song's
background. The musical selections
focused on a theme of relationships and
marriage in New York City.
Adam Hester, associate professor of
theatre, directed Side by Side by Sondheim..
Pianist Clay Freeman, Abilene High
School teacher, accompanied the cast.
The Fall Dinner Theatre, which ran in
Sewell Auditorium Aug. 24 - Sept. 8
also featured a guest solo performance
by Jeanette Lipford, assistant professor
emerita of voice.
Hester said the show was meant to
showcase students talents to their
fullest, to give students the opportunity
to put Sondheim's work on their
resumes, and for the audience, whichseems to like musicals.
"Audiences particularly enjoy musicals,
and this revue provides a potpourri
of musical theatre genres," Hester
said. "Side by Side also was a chance to
familiarize my students with
Sondheim's work."
Allison Seibert, senior music theatre
major from Grapevine, said performing
Sondheim's work was an excellent
experience.
"Sondheim is very challenging
work, and since I am a music theatre
major, I wanted to be a part of that,"
Allison said.
Side by Side by Sondheim was Seibert's
second Fall Dinner Theatre production.
Seibert said theatre students don't try
out for the fall performance because
practices are during the summer.
"The dinner theatre is not something
students are required to try out for,"
Allison said. "The number of cast members
is lower than other performances
because students are still home for the
summer."
Sondheim has written Broadway
musicals since the 1950's and has won
numerous awards.
