Talent Doesn't Live up to Success
A chieving success in sports can
be a fickle business. Sometimes
a huge collection of talent
seems to be all it takes to win. Just
ask George Steinbrenner and his perennial
World Series champion New York
Yankees.
But in other instances, immeasurable
qualities like desire, toughness
and heart become the determining
factors of a team's success. For proof of
that statement, look no further than the
2002 Super Bowl champion New
England Patriots, who had to defeat a
talent-superior St. Louis Rams squad in
order to attain football's greatest prize.
And just as the Rams fell to a team
that possessed less talent than they did,
for the ACU Wildcat golf team, 2002
was a year in which talent alone wasn't
enough to equal success.
As the season began, the Wildcats
were looking to continue the success
the team had enjoyed the previous
year. Throughout the 2001 season, ACU
had been one of the best squads in
Division II golf, dominating the majority
of opposition in both the Lone Star
Conference and the South Central
Region. And with a reloaded team full
of talent, head coach Vince Jarrett and
his players once again held high expectations
for their performance in the
new year.
