Still Seeking
A sk softball head coach Carol Tabor at
the beginning of the season if she
thought her team would fail to make
the postseason for the first time since 1999, and
the answer would have been a resounding no.
Who could argue with the sixth-year coach?
After leading the Wildcats to three Lone Star
Conference tournament appearances and a coLSC
South Division title in 2000, Tabor returned
a talent-laden squad in 2002 with the potential
to finally bring an LSC title to ACU alone.
The combination of veteran leadership from
former LSC Freshmen of the Year and first-team
all-LSC players Veronica Villa and Maurine
"Mo" McWilliams and one of the league's best
infields-Melissa Williams, J.D. Williams,
Heather Hicks, Robin Woodall and Misty
Pryer-created a potent combination of speed,
power, pitching and contact hitting that made
what many thought would be a force to be reckoned
with in 2002.
Instead, a disastrous LSC South Division
campaign and untimely injuries landed ACU,
12-23 overall and 4-10 in the South Division, in
an unfamiliar place at the end of the 2002 season:
last place in the division standings and
home for the postseason.
Consistency and a stacked South Division
were key factors in the Wildcats' 2002 misfortunes.ACU accumulated a 6-13 record in non-conference
play. Facing some of the best NCAA
Division II teams in the nation, the Wildcats lost
three of four games in the Division II Leadoff
Classic in Irving and three out of their next five
contests at a highly competitive tournament in
Georgia.
Coach Tabor calls the LSC one of toughest
conferences in Division II, and the South
Division provided a formidable roadblock to
the Wildcats' postseason plans in 2002.
Eventual LSC champion Texas A&M-Kingsville
combined with perennial contenders ACU,
Eastern New Mexico, Tarleton State and Texas
Woman's, the regular season South Division
champion, to pit five teams battling for three
postseason spots.
