One to Grow on
O ne old cliche of sport states that
most athletic endeavors are games
measured in miles and yards and
feet, but ultimately decided in inches. For
example, although a football team must go
100 yards across a field to score a touchdown,
the action that happens over the minute
space between the field and the goal line is
what really determines who wins and who
loses.
And just as the width of a finger is
enough to determine the difference between
a touchdown and a fourth down, so too can
equally tiny distinctions determine the difference
between teams that win and teams that
struggle to win. For proof of that statement,

to indicate it, ACU was much closer to being
a good team than perhaps even the players
themselves realized.
Verification of just how close the 'Cats
were to being a .500 or better team could be
found in a few simple statistics. For the season
ACU had averaged 68.5 points per game.
Their opponents had averaged a marginally
better 68.8. The Wildcat players had a higher
field goal percentage than their opponents,
