It's that mistletoe, turkey,
happy time again.
In the spirit of the season,
one group which has tried to
say "Merry Christmas" to ev-
eryone is the Naples Brownie
Troop 9.
Their four leaders divided
the group into four sections
and each section made a large
Christmas card.
The youngsters contributed
their ideas on what the cards
should be and did the final
assembly of the cards under
leader supervision.
The cards are displayed in
prominent places.
One, a Christmas tree, is on
display at the door of South-
western Electric Power Com-
pany's office. A mailbox dec-
orated for Christmas is in the
post office. A snowman card
is in the Morris County Na-
tional Bank, and a Santa Claus
card is in the David Gran-
berry Memorial Hospital.
Leaders of the Brownies
are Mrs. L. A. Carroll, Mrs.
Benny Best, Mrs. B. W. Batche-
lor and Mrs. Lee Narramore.
The members are Paula

E. D. "Doc" BARNWELL
E. D. "Doc" Barnwell,
who lives in the city of
Lone Star, has his name
in the news because of
the crop he raised this
year.
Barnwell is not a farm-
er, but a welder in Lone
Star Steel's central main-
tenance shop. He doesn't
even have a garden, but
he does have an unusual
"crop."
This year, Barnwell har-
vested more than 40 edi-
ble bananas from the five
trees in his front yard.
The trees were still bear-
ing in late October, but
cold weather forced him
to cut the fruit while it
was still green. He ripen-
ed the fruit in the house.
This is the second year
ihr.t Barnwell has eaten ba-
nanas from his own trees.
Last year, he brought the
fruit to work in his lunch
box and let fellow work-
ers sample the resuIS
long hours of care.
He goes to great lengths
to protect his trees against
the cold weather each
year. First the tree is cut
back, then a felt-paper
wall is erected. Another
felt paper wall is built
outside the first and the
cavity poured full of saw-
dust insulation. A plastic
bag is added to keep out
rain.
Once the trees are
through the winter, rich
soil and water every day
are the key to producing
bananas, Barnwell said.
The fruit is smaller and
sweeter than the Central
American banana that is
bought in stores. Barn-
well isn't sure whether it
is the type tree or the
East Texas soil that makes
the difference. Whatever
the reason, it is news in
East Texas when a steel
employee opens his lunch
box and snacks on a bana-
na grown in his own yard.
Mr. and Mrs. Preston Stone
and Laticia visited with friends
in Jefferson Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Monte Hale
and Danny spent the week
end in Texarkana with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. R.
Hale.
Mrs. Janie Hampton is vis-
iting for several weeks with
her daughter, Mrs. H. E. Lob-
dell, and family in Ft. Worth.
Mr. and Mrs. Leon Garrett,
Herschel and Linda, visited
with relatives in Bodcaw and
Prescott, Ark., and attended
evening services at the East-
view Baptist Church in Tex-
arkana on Sunday. His broth-
er, the Rev. Delbert Garrett,
is pastor of the church.
Mr. and Mrs. Claud Wood
of St. Louis visited with Mr.
and Mrs. Emmett Fleming
last week end.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Gamble
spent the week end in Hous-
ton with Mr. and Mrs. D. W.
Watkins, Connie and Donald.
After being sick for some
time, C. 0. Freeman, a long
time resident of Naples who
now lives at Daingerfield,
spent Saturday in Naples see-
ing old friends, among whom
were Miss Mettie Story and
Mrs. Marvin Gallaway.
Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Hicks
and Mr. and Mrs. August Lew-
is spent Friday in Mt. Pleas-
ant with Mr. and Mrs. Otto
Spearman.
