PRESIDENT'S PAGE
by Howard Pollan
As a charter member and its first Treasurer, I have been privileged to
watch very closely the growth of the East Texas Genealogical Society. The track
record of this organization is outstanding and every year seems better than the
last.
I am grateful that so many of the officers and committee chairmen have so
graciously agreed to serve again this year. I am especially happy that Mrs.
Janice Brown has agreed to edit the EAST TEXAS FAMILY RECORDS again. I am most
fortunate to have such an outstanding group to help me through 1982. Believe me,
I will need all of you.
With such an excellent record as this Society has, I find it difficult
to hope for improvement in our accomplishments. I have high hopes, though, to
proceed in an expeditious manner with the publishing of Smith County Cemetery
records. It is my fervent wish that this program be completed as soon as we
feasibly can. Then, too, there is at least one more volume of ancestor charts
to be published, plus EAST TEXAS FAMILY RECORDS, THE BULLETIN, and other miscellaneous
printing to be done this year. However, in Cecil Cammack, we have an
excellent printer and I am sure he will be up to any need in the printing department. We plan to have at least one meeting of the County Representatives this
year. Those we have had in the past have been a great pleasure and of much
benefit to the Society.
The many accomplishments of the Society in the past have not been gained
from any one person. It has been a group effort and it must be a group effort
that continues our growth.
We need material for the quarterly, so if you have something that has
not been published heretofore, please check with the editor to see if it can be
used.
We are looking forward to a most outstanding Seminar on April 17, which
will be our FIFTH! Mrs. Mary B. Warren will come to speak to us about "Migration
and Research in Georgia." As you all know, Mary B. Warren edits "FAMILY PUZZLERS"
and is one of the foremost authorities on genealogical research in the southern
states. Even if you have heard her speak on this subject before, it is a cinch
you will learn something new from Mary Warren.
Our regular meetings are scheduled for the second Saturday of each month
at 2:00 p.m. in the Activity Room of the Marvin Methodist Church at 300 West Erwin
Street in Tyler. To try and make it more convenient for the members of the Executive
Board, a meeting for them has been scheduled at 1:00 p.m. in the same building
just before the regular meeting.
I am looking forward to excellent programs this year because Mrs. Nell
Everett is working very hard to line up a string of outstanding programs. She
has done this job before and is very capable as First Vice President and Program
Chairman.
As I told you at the December meeting when the. officers for 1982 were installed,
I promise to do the best I can. And that is all a mule can do!
