AN EXPLANATION ABOUT THE LETTERS...
Almost all the references in the foregoing footnotes to family members are
based on the research of Charles D. Smith, M.D., Roanoke, Virginia. The originals
of the letters were given to him in 1955 by his aunt, Lottie Smith Eagle (18821964)
who lived all but a few years of her life in Tyler.
Although he was never certain who gave them to his Aunt Lottie, he always
believed she got them from Florence Smith Fleishel, to whom the letters were
written.
In the 1950's, Hope Smith of Gresham, Texas, transcribed the letters, and
in 1981, Charles Smith gave the originals to a younger family member, Marc B.
Smith, Jr. of Fort Worth, who promised to keep them safe and in good condition.
When the time comes, Marc will again pass them on to another Smith descendant for
continued preservation.
To help orient the reader with some of the Smith family tree, Marc B. Smith's
"Introductory Notes" tell you that William Harlan Smith was the first son and
oldest child of Aaron Stuart and Lucinda Willis Smith. His "tree,"in part, is:
