ALLERGIES AND DENTAL
DISORDERS
Q: Can my allergies have an
impact on my dental health?
A:The answer is "yes," especial-
ly if you take antihistamines for
relief. Antihistamines can some-
times cause a dry mouth. That
means saliva is not able to wash
away food particles, which in
turn can cause a buildup of
plaque and, eventually, cavities.
If you use an antihistamine, your
dentist will likely recommend
that you drink plenty of water or
suck on sugar-free candy to keep
your mouth moist.
Another concern is that if you
are allergic to one substance, you
may be allergic, or become aller-
gic, to other things. It's impor-
tant for your dentist to know of
any allergies you have, particu-
larly if you are allergic to any
drugs. Penicillin, for instance, is
a drug to which many people are
allergic. Substitutes are avail-
able. Allergic reactions can be
mild- itchy eyes and a runny
nose, for instance. They can also
be severe, however. So discuss
your allergies with your dentist.
