By Donnita Nesbit Fisher
Students at Burnett Junior High
School are being asked to take extra
cleanliness measures after two stu
dents were diagnosed with a antibi-
otic resistant staph infection.
Earlier this month, school nurse
Dana Wood sent a letter to all stu
dents' homes detailing the problem.
The students diagnosed with the
infection were both in the athletic
department. They have Melhicillin-
resistant Slti/thylocix < us aureus.
"All of us have staph bacteria on
our skin and in our nose.
Sometimes a drug-resistant strain
can spread quickly. We are taking
the proper steps to curb the spread.
Although it was confined to the ath-
letic department, we felt we needed
to go over good hygiene practices'
with the entire student body," said
Susan Dacus. Wylie ISD spokesper-
son.
Ask Dr. Hambrice
Other antibiotics can be used to
treat the methicillian-resistant
infection. Wood said
"This type of infection common-
ly causes boils and soft tissue infec-
tion." she said. "The symptoms
include redness and warmth to the
wound, pain, drainage, discomfort
and swelling."
As a precaution, the school's
"custodial staff has enforced a more
rigorous cleaning process of our
locker rooms." Wood said.
To stem the spread of the infec-
tion. the Center of Disease Control
recommends frequent hand wash-
ing, no sharing of towels or equip-
ment. showering after physical
activity and washing practice
clothes daily.
"We have asked that the coaches
review and reinforce good hygiene
with our students," Wood said.
If parents are concerned about
their child, they should contact their
private physician. Wood said. She
also asks that she be informed if a
student "has been diagnosed with
an infectious condition or if one is
suspected."
The school district follows health
guidelines established by the CDC
and the Texas Department of Health
and has "been in contact with the
Epidemiology Specialist of Collin
County," Wood wrote.

4 SLEEP APNEA
Q: What is sleep apnea?
A: Apnea is an interruption or
cessation of breathing. For the 2
to 4 percent of middle-aged adults
i,'tffected by sleep apnea, u is not
uncommon lor them to stop
breathing for up to 70 times in an
hour. These episodes can last from
II) to 30 seconds. Breathing
resumes with a loud snort or gasp.
Episodes of sleep apnea deprive a
person of oxygen and thorough
rest and can cause extreme day-
time drowsiness. Most people
who suffer Irom sleep apnea also
snore. Snoring actually is the
sound of the vibration of the soft
palate and the adjoining structures
of the throat. It is caused by the
narrowing and thickening of the
upper airway tissues. And when a
person sleeps, the soft tissue at the
back of the throat, the muscles in
ihe airway and the tongue all
relax, letting the tongue fall back
into the airway, your dentist, in
consultation with your doctor,
may be able to custom-fit an oral
appliance that helps keep the air-
way open If you have a problem
with snoring, restless sleep, talk
with your dentist about solutions.
