Inaugural Leadership Sachse class taking applications
By Patty Montagno
If you're looking for ways to
become involved in the community
does the Sachse Economic
Development Corporation and the
Sachse Chamber of Commerce have
a plan for you.
' The two organizations are present-
ing the first Leadership Sachse
course.
"Leadership programs are very
common; most area communities
offer similar programs," Sachse
Economic Development Corporation
Executive Director Guy Brown said.
"We believe that the citizens of
Sachse should have the same oppor-
tunities as everyone else, so we and
the chamber are offering this
course."
The course will present informa-
tion regarding all facets of city gov-
ernment, the community, school dis-
tricts and the arts.
"The program is intended to be
fun and informative," Brown said.
"We hope to involve more people
in the betterment of their communi-
ty."
Leadership Committee chairman
is Wil Large. Committee members
are Brown, Stephen Stanley, Terry
Shatter, John Roberts, Hal Hinkley,
Patsy Covington, Steve Hammerle
and Keith Reimer.
Participants will meet in various
classroom and field sessions over a
ten month period. These sessions
include discussions about city gov-
ernment. business and economic
development, education, and leader-
ship skills.

Program objectives are to inform
participants about Sachse's history,
government, economy, social issues,
needs, opportunities and the existing
processes for dealing with civic
issues and to introduce participants
to current Sachse leaders and estab-
lish a dialogue with them.
Organizers also hope participants
will become involved in activities for
the betterment of Sachse and help
contribute to the city's quality of life.
"After completing this course
attendees will learn more about
Sachse and and get a behind-the-
scenes look at organizations that
serve and impact our community,"
Large said.
"Attendees will have a great
opportunity to network with area
leaders who will share their experi-
ences and opinions with them."
According to Brown the purpose
of the course is to seek out the finest
leaders from all aspects of the
Sachse community and help prepare
them to participate in community
oriented activities.
"The course is designed to pio-
mote increased understanding of the
problems, opportunities and issues
affecting the Sachse community and
the surrounding metro area," he said.
"It will advance community
involvement and the exercise of civic
responsibility by Leadership Sachse
class members."
This program is a mix of eight full
day and evening course sessions and
includes an overnight retreat.
"Applicants to Leadership Sachse
must fully understand that participat-
ing in the program is a serious time
commitment," Brown said.
"Participants must attend the ses-
sions to complete the course."
Large said the course is planned
so attendees can develop their own
leadership skills while making new
friends in an enjoyable setting.
The tuition for Leadership Sachse
is $300 which covers the cost of
receptions, speakers, proposed mate-
rials, mailings, and all other program
costs.
"This is a very reasonable cost,"
Covington said.
"I have been involved with numer-
ous other leadership programs and I
was pleased that we were able to
keep the costs down."
The following are some examples
of communities that offer the pro-
gram and what they charge:
Arlington $2,500 plus a $50 appli-
cation fee, Frisco-$400, Garland-
$695, Irving-$800, Plano-$850,
Richardson-$950 and Rowlett-$595.
Anyone living and/or working in
Sachse is eligible. The make-up of
each class is carefully considered by
the Leadership Sachse Committee to
ensure representation of a variety of
professional, civic and demographic
backgrounds.
"I was thrilled with the favorable
response to the program," Sachse
Chamber President Tina Stelnicki
said.
"Several of the candidates said
they wanted to join the program to
have the opportunity to get first hand
information of the innerworkings of
our city and the community."
The final selection was made by
the Leadership Sachse Committee
and will be notified shortly.
Some qualified applicants may not
be accepted into the program on their
first application due to class size
restraints.
Those applicants are encouraged
to reapply the following year. It is
the goal of the Leadership Sachse
Committee that everyone interested
in the future of Sachse participate in
Leadership Sachse.
"The Sachse Chamber of
Commerce and the SEDC have
worked hard to price the program in
order to maximize participation,"
Brown said.
"The program is intended to be
fun and informative. We hope to
inform participants about the
processes employed by regional
leaders to address important issues."
